I'm coming to the end of my 10-hour trial, and I just tried it again with the very latest patch and sliders.
Oh dear.
There are some decent ideas in here. For example, they press you in your own half, and just as you're getting excited by this, they run past you.
But the defending. Wowzer. Defending is so random. Not only down to the fact that your defence parks itself and won't move. Worse than that. When you've got control of a defender and trying to judge when to tackle, well, don't bother. It's random. And that's because the AI doesn't respect the laws of physics at all. So you can make the perfect tackle but the AI will decide whether it bends its jelly legs out of the way in an instant or not. That's why I call it "random".
And then attacking. You literally have to force yourself to pass the ball in this game, because it becomes glaringly obvious that it's designed around one-on-one dribbling. So there's actually no point in passing. Just give it to your fastest player, usually the winger, and just move with him slowly, then quick, then slow, then quick, left then right (you don't need the trick stick) and you'll get further than passing it ever will.
I want to play in a football style. But this game actively stops me doing this. FIFA, and now FC, have always had part of the game that was like this. But now, it's just so obvious that you can't even pretend this is a game of football.
It just wants you to get to the other end of the pitch as quickly as possible. And when you've done that, it wants to get the AI to the other end of the pitch as quickly as possible.
Like I say, EA's game has always been a bit like this. But this year it's so obvious that it's just so incredibly boring.
I'm not a demanding consumer. I really want a football game with all the right teams and that plays something like football. I'm very forgiving if all that is in place. But for the love of all things Pele, this is a really poor joke.
