English Premier League thread

I wanted to post about what I personally think the Liverpool owners are attempting to do. There has been a lot of talk specifically comming from gerrard about the youth policy they have implemented. Well on the outset it has not been confirmed officially from the club they are doing this, it has been hinted at. Obvisouly Stevie G is somewhat thinking of himself and his age, of course a player of his caliber probably does not want to be part of a youth build, and suffer mediocrity for the sake of the future. Understandably he is adverse to this. But if you look at it from the perspective of FSG, they certainly were burned in the Daglish transfers... They paid a lot of money for players who did not perform and from all accounts were not worth the monies paid. They have seemed to have taken a different approach. You see this approach in North American sports. It is the rebuild thru youth policy, typically called 5 year plans.Basically you keep a few solid veterans who are good in the locker room and can lead(caragher, gerrard, reina) and you bring in as much young talent as you can. You develop and nurture that young talent, knowing you will not win right away, but setting yourself up for a period of prosperity when the younger players come of age. Understandably the fans want to win now, however that comes with a price. It could either go the way of city, or the way with liverpool when they wasted all of that money on avg players and got avg results. I think patience is key here for liverpool and there supporters, fans of Bundesliga please correct me if I'm wrong, but is this not what Klopp has done at Dortmund? Ajax does something similar but they end up selling as the players come of age. I am not aware of how succesfull the yonger liverpool sides are doing, but we do see the young talent on the current squad(coates, sterling, wisdom, henderson, suso) mixed in with a bit older talent in sturidge, allen, assidi, lucas, suarez.. and of course the veterans.. Time will tell if this approach will work, but im not so sure they can afford another situation like they had with daglish...

Very good post, gomito...

cortese is gonna look like a right twat if soton get relegated now, he aint even give a reason for the sacking and poche aint even speak english..

good post but kind of obvious what they are trying to achieve really.

The problem with this model is that 5 years is a long time, especially if LFC cannot secure CL football in that time.

Also, they are such a big club which demands success. I dont think the supporters will give the Rodgers model 5 years. If they get into CL in the next 2 seasons though this will work for FSG.

Also dont forget that Man Utd, Chelsea, Man City, Spurs and Arsenal will also get a lot better in that time period.

Oh man the irony!

ye pardew is a fool.

but how incredible that league 2 bradford knocked out 3 prem teams and are now in final of c1 cup:SHOCK:

:LMAO: what just happen to Hazard ? im watching on streaming an just now video start frezing , did he hit that ball guy ? or he was "acting" like he has been hurt ?

EDIT: just seen he kick him

Yeah the ball boy jumped on the ball and was lying over it. He didn't release it, Hazard then seemed to kick him on the ground which was a very poor thing to do irrespective of provocations.

Swansea were the better team over the two legs, to be honest they had almost won the whole tie after the first match. Nothing against them but I hope Bradford win, the run to the final has already given Bradford enough money to survive comfortably for another few years, which didn't necessarily look to be the case a few years ago, but Bradford winning could really give lower league teams a boost.

I want Swansea to win and i don't agree about Hazard.
He deserves a 'normal' ban, but that ball 'boy' is a cunt.

I love Swansea and i don't think that they are to blame, but the ballboy isn't an innocent victim. It seems that both parties have apologized, this should settle it. Hazard made a mistake, but not a bad one...

im just curious to know what would you say is that was Suarez ? you and many others !

you think you'll say something different than this ? honestly

Eden Hazard, how much did Chelsea pay for him again? Absolutely unprofessional twat!

Still we're on our way to Wemberleeeeeeeey!!!! :D

Hazard should have maintained his composure but I don't blame him, anyone that says they wouldn't have done the same in the same situation is a liar.

I would have booted the ball boy.

We would say Suarez is a cunt, and this incident would not have changed that assessment! :)

Exactly !

Hazard never has bitten anyone, he hasn't had any history of racism, he never dives, until now he never had a single red card and this for the player that for 3 years wat the most fouled player in Ligue 1... Quite a difference with Suarez.

It seems some Liverpool fans simply can't be remotely reasonable or objective... Next season when Suarez plays for Bayern you will also think he is a cunt.

luton town(non-league team with a terrible manager) beating norwich away has to be the biggest shock of all time. the FA cup is still amazing.

spurs losing to leeds also, i fucking love it when premier league teams get knocked out by lower league teams. it's what FA cup all about init

You're very defensive about your fellow countrymen, gerd. :SMUG:

Yes, i am biased. But who isn't ?
About Hazard: if you look at the number of football players and other football people who have defended him, maybe i migh have a point even if i'm terribly biased...

But i'm glad you did react to my posts, to be honest i was afraid that i was on your ignore list and that would have been stupid, but maybe i deserved it...

Sometimes people's reactions here make me wonder (and this isn't about you Aboutreika): this isn't a scientific website, what we do here is merely pub talk about football... If Hazard would get a 15 match ban, IMO that would be unfair and undeserved, but basically i wouldn't matter too much (well, maybe i would because my 13 year old daughter is an Hazard fan and she would take that very bad...it wouldn't be a good time in our house...).

PS: at the same time i do realise that Belgian football players are currently overhyped in England...this will not last and in the long term the hype is a bad thing.

I'd much prefer to see the "lesser sides" make the final over the same old teams!! and thats coming from a united supporter. Swansea deserve it, they've been playing good football for the past 2 seasons.

This is pretty cool, coming off the back of the Soccernomics research that almost all of a clubs success can be correlated to wages:
financial-fair-play-table-epl.jpg

Just think how amazing football would be with a salary cap!

A salary cap would have to be worldwide. Any league that instituted a cap, whether directly or indirectly, would destroy itself and its clubs (if they didn't create a breakaway league pretty sharpish)

American sports can get away with it to some extent because they are pretty much the only game in town.

With regards that graph, it baffles me how our wages jumped up so much when we downgraded our squad. Utter fail.

Also, America is 1 country with all teams and leagues falling into 1 tax structure. If each European country did it, some leagues will have players with double tax.

It seems nobody cares about Swansea's win against Bradford in the League Cup: congratulations to Swansea.
Everybody seemed to sympathize with massive underdogs Bradford, i wanted Swansea to win.
I'm over the moon with this triumph of an underdog club that is a joy to watch.
A club that is truly well led. I hope Swansea can stay in the EPL for the next 50 years and longer. They are evidence that you can get great results without oligarchs. Well done !!!

Yeah it is great that Swansea won, I just feel sorry for Bradford getting so outplayed in the final.

Swansea winning and the run Bradford went on to get to the final are great for the game.

I thought that Bradford gave too much respect to Swansea. In their cup run they had constantly closed teams down in the last quarter of the pitch (ie just outside their own box) and then either use the pace of Zavon Heins or hit it long to Hanson but they never did this against Swansea. Swansea hadly ever score goals from long range and they dont score that often from crosses and headers too, you can afford to give them space around and beyond the halfway line as long as you pressure them nearer your own goal. Why Bradford didn't do this and saturate their own half with defenders and then press Swansea once they got within 30 meters of their goal is a little puzzling as they had been playing this sort of game all through their cup run. I didn't think the ref needed to send the keeper off, but then British refs tend not to have any degree of common sense and love to play their part in big games too (see Clattenburg and Webb).

I didn't want Swansea to win mainly because I was supporting the underdog (Bradford) and also because of the nepotic chav ballboy (or rather ball-man).

Despite the ballman i wanted Swansea to win.
The underdog has won, but because they had to play a super underdog, the underdog don't get the credit they deserved....

That is a good point Gerd, although the League cup just isn't enough to get that excited about.

But I think most people like Swansea and also Laudrup so were happy with them winning it.

When we lost to Birmingham in the League cup final it was crap, but even if we would have won it, people would have said they only won the League Cup in 8 years. It is a tinsy wincy bit better than winning nothing for 8 years.

But for Swansea to win it is great and to get a trophy after all of this time. But people's lack of interest is just because of the nature of the cup they were playing in.

In saying all that though Arsenal took it very seriously and played a full team against Bradford and got beaten
