False 9 Football - My little football sim project

False9Football.png
Description
I always wondered if I could convert my skills in to making a game instead of modding them. After a quick discussion and showcasing what I could achieve in a few days, I decided to give it a go and see how far I can get with this project. By no means do I expect this to become a full game, successful or even compete with the gaming giants but it may be a fun little project to do to keep my mind busy and learn something new.

What features would you want in this game?
This list is likely to change
Gameplay
- Similar controls and features to FIFA/FC

Game Modes
- Kick Off / Play Now
- Manager Mode
- Skill Games / Practice Mode

Engine
Unreal Engine 5

Latest Video footage
An initial short video of very early progress. I only have basic movement and positioning with no animations for any interaction. The only player actions currently in the game are pass, cross and shoot. What is funny, when I got to this stage it immediately reminded me of Football Manager for some reason. Anyway. Lots more to do :)

A lot of the progress to this point has been ensuring I can do what I want in Unreal Engine. It looks like I can, so it is all about building on the foundations now.

Thanks for your answer. I wouldn’t have the motivation to create a game myself, but I’m very interested in what you can achieve with the help of AI.

That looks already very interesting. Do you plan to add an edit mode too, and make everything moddable? :))

Mate, this looks veeeeery interesting! Keep it up! 🤩
If you ever needed help (down the line I guess) with kit textures/kit designs or player names (to have unlicensed teams to at least have credible names and not fake ones Konami-style which don't make sense, like Flugzeug for Füllkrug), you'd just have to ask!

Wow man, all that you already built looks so promising! I REALLY hope you'll be able to go through it, although I of course realize how tough this project would be. Anyway, seeing an historic modder of the community give a shot to build a game from scratch makes me nothing but genuinely happy!

Impressive mate! I really like the ball physics and the controls/contact the players have on, it could be a game changer for real (like a too strong pass resulting in a long and difficult oriented control etc.)

Congrats and keep going. Don't rush it. Try to find people to help you in your project as creating a Football game is already hard for a full team i can't imagine alone...
And if you need something about stats, not only creation but how they could affect the gameplay without loosing the feeling, you can ask me.

Then if you continue an manage to get a database, we can discuss about balance and a system to create neither over or underrated players with a min-max system and longtime ago, i tried to make a set of stats with few information, and it's doable. But it's not important for the moment (stats impact yes in counterpart, that's what define gameplay)

If you want to do it yourself for first and if you already did the assets about attributes to gameplay impact, just create two legends team, easier to give them values ;)

On the defending side, there are some really interesting things you could do with controls. I almost think of a real time strategy game - where you’re controlling defensive shape at a macro level. You’re the captain calling out assignments and team strategy, as opposed to managing an individual defender. The skill gap is then strategic - when do you press, when do you contain. Where is the danger on the field? How quickly can you recognize it and how do you address it?

inb4 people complaining about using Unreal Engine 5 ahaha

just jesting it's just that there's a hate bandwagon lately led by grifters like Threat Interactive

how do you find working on it so far?

I currently (from my perspective) am daydreaming about a 3vs3 sepak takraw/futsal hybrid singleplayer game with local comic book art style (Ujang/Sergio Aragones style) so the tone is pretty much cheeky and the vibes are chill

I know I'm far from achieving this goal with not knowing how to script/program the opponents heck I only know how to use visual scripting BluePrints hahah but so far doing the key animations like juggling and flair tricks alongside the beer bellied main character (important for that unc-feel)

the name Kipas Libas itself is like local jokes from the late 60s era that sounds plausibly like a sepak takraw moves too

Hi guys, hope you are all doing well.

I thought I'd give a bit of an update on the project.

I have been trying to build on the foundations of the first post by adding lots that will help to the progress of the entire project and provide answers to whether i can make it moddable.

First steps to a simulated crowd.

I spent some time making a very low poly "crowd man" that can be colored and animated, especially on the lower tiers (where the camera can see). It needs more work though!

First steps to adding teams to the game that can be modded and added in with mods
I've built a system that allows me (and modders) to import CSVs into the system so it can generate, teams, leagues and players easily. Although, I am a little concerned about how this will work in a released game, so I am looking at different options.

The leagues automatically look for assets in the "UI/Leagues" folders (which will include the Mods folder)

Added IK based animations for moving around, interacting with the ball and shooting and goalkeepers (forgot to show the 180 turning animation)

Other stuff

Ive also added scoring goals, stoppage of play, corners, throw ins, all the "rules" needed to make a match functional.

Whats next?

I want to add some proper passing, shooting, crossing animations. Then I am developing a moddable gameplay tuning system similar to FIFA/FC (fields, float curves etc) so I can easily tune gameplay things like shooting, passing, speed, movement etc etc.

If you want some more info on stuff, let me know

I commend your passion mate, hats off to you, I wish you all the success in future, I cant help thinking if EA/Konami had more people like you working on their games we'd be in a better place.

EA don't care about making a football game.
They are only interested in making an easy accessible game with their primary motivation to make as much money as possible.
Just remember GOALS MEANS FUN everyone.

This is awesome to see.

Are you working alone on this?
Thanks man. Yes, I am alone.

With each passing year EA are trying to push more and more blocks to modding and I am getting increasingly concerned I cant make the game the way I like it. I've always had this idea of making a football game thats part FIFA, part FM. I know how to do most stuff in Unreal Engine, so why not give it a shot :)

That's awesome.

The other game being made (4fansgames) had a lot of traction because of the visuals and animation, he's also using UE5, so hopefully you can tap into that once you get far enough. Not many people understand everything needed under the hood and are easily taken in by visuals, I expect your project to get huge traction once you're at that stage. Will be watching closely!

I strongly support this effort. While the payback takes much longer, every hour you spend on your game pays you back directly (yes even the bug-chasing). Plus, as you’ve stated, you have direct control over all aspects of your game.

One piece of unsolicited advice: don’t feel constrained by what FIFA and PES have done over the past 25 years. Stay true to your vision, especially when it conflicts with what is expected of a soccer video game.

Ahhh i was writing something to you @Paul-v and i pushed a keyboard combo that erased everything lol.

So i'll make it brief : have fun to do it and never puts timelines to finish X things to yourself. It's impressive what you showed us in terms of movement/physics aswell as graphically.
Focus on what you're interested and think about it, there's not a single way to create a casual football game : you can try for example to make dribbling, well, pushing the ball not sticked to the players for example. Not something as harcore like Kick Off/Sensible (a small assistance) but it could be a game changer, and don't care if people like it or not : it's your own project!

And i'm sure if you're found some teamates to do some job you don't really gives interest (but important for them), you may advance in the best way on your project. One advice : never fix you a timeline for finishing X stuffs, it kills the creativity and the fun to do what you're doing.
Take your time, and don't put too much pressure on you : be happy about your accomplishement. That's something i unfortunately got hard with it : i'm never satisfy to my job and always see what's not done... Don't think like this. Even if i'm enjoying editing, perhaps i take it too much at hearth too lol

Hey thanks :)

I came up with this name well over 10 years ago before AI was even a thing. A lot of the assets I am using was from a previous attempt at doing this on a very old engine.
Best engine and gameplay i have ever seen , is fifa14 and fifa15. I always thinking that if someone can copy that type of gameplay into todays engine capabilities , we ll have the perfect game
