Latest reports from Marussia are that Bianchi is still critical and that they are asking for patience as they want to respect privacy of Bianchi family. They have also said that representatives from Marussia F1 Team and Scuderia Ferrari have remained in hospital to give their support to Jules and his family.
 
there was a video posted today filmed by someone standing beside the track of Bianchi's crash with crane. When I found about it it was already taken down by FOM on copyright grounds, but if it appears again I will post it here. Those who saw it are reporting that it is really disturbing and that it can be seen how Bianchi hits crane with left side of his head.

F me, that is horrifying!:CONFUSE: And not only Bianchi was "lucky" in that situation, also the guards there can be lucky that they weren't hit by that Marussia.
 
this crash was nasty, i hope bianchi will be alrite. i don't get why the green flag is being waved here?
 
well, Sutil's car was moved behind it (towards the way from which cars come when driving) so yellows that waved there were changed with green that means it is safe to race once you past that steward station. Before you pass it you are still inside "yellow zone" in which you need to slow. Also to note is that there were double yellow flags on each station which means "marshals on track, slow down and be prepared to stop". Quite normal thing with flag that is here, nothing out of the ordinary. Bianchi (and everyone else) was slowed down by yellow flags before that station, starting just halfway between T6 and T7 (track map is in one of my previous posts)


EDIT: FIA has released info that Bianchi is critical but stable. Future info will be shared based upon wishes of his parents to keep their privacy

watching the vid again, i'm surprised he still alive, his head connects straight into the back of the recovery vehicle.
 
some positive news from world of F1 today. Jean Todt was visiting M.Schumacher and has said that we can expect to see Michael living normal life soon. What he meant by soon isn't known.
 
Does it look as Bianchi's car did an "aquaplanning", right? I can't think of any other scenario that results in this, but I'm not an expert at all, so what do you guys think about it?
 
the story based on witnesses, telemetry, video footage and photos is that he did aquaplane off the track into the gravel, just the same as Sutil about a minute or two earlier. Just as Sutil, Bianchi tried to correct the car and he succeeded, but in the process overdid it which put him on a straight nose first trajectory to the place of the accident. He was traveling at about 130mph (210kmh) when he left the track
 
Thanks for the precise info, Cuky! I had aquaplanning once and had an accident against a wall, moving the wheel or pressing the pedals had no apparent effect on my car trajectory for 2 seconds until I crashed. Luckily, it was a lateral impact and had no physical damage of any kind. But the feeling of having no control whatsoever over my own car was scary.

I hope he survives, this is a mix of bad management by FIA and bad luck.

well, aquaplaning occurs when tires float on the standing water instead of them rolling on the hard surface. Higher the speed higher the chance is that tire won't be able to clear out the water in front of it so that when it gets to that spot few thousands of a second later it has a nice "dry" contact with road. In F1 there are 2 wet weather tires: Intermediate that can clear out about 25L of water each at full speed and Wet that can clear out about 65L of water each at the full speed. Problem is that sometimes there is so much water that even if tires are managing to cope with it car floats on its underbody which is just few mm from the ground when car is standing still and even lower when there is downforce generated at high speed.

I haven't personally experienced aquaplaning and I hope that I never will, but I have seen drivers in front or just behind me loosing control when there is lots of water on the road...and it doesn't look like fun at all.
 
Experienced it briefly on the motorway a couple of times when there was a lot of standing water. It feels like the car loses connection with the road and glides (as it's technically floating, obviously), but luckily I was driving in a straight line and didn't need to make any steering or braking inputs. Just ride it out for a couple of seconds until grip returns.

Must be a different story if aquaplaning occurs while cornering. :II
 
Well, Brundle explained it in this way: There is a narrow patch of standing water. First your front loses the grip and you start to understeer off to the outside of the track. Instinctively you lift your foot from the throttle and than rears get to that same standing water and suddenly you are oversteering as fronts had regained their grip. Basically you are just a passenger to the wall if it is close to the track. If you are lucky and there is large run-off area you can regain the control or in worst case just beach yourself in the gravel and be unable to continue the race.

Lots of oil money in Azerbaijan but I'm sure that's a complete coincidence.

Not sure I want yet another street circuit in F1.

I saw the Blancpain race in Baku on TV last year (although a different layout to this). Pretty obvious F1 would follow at some point.
 
I have nothing against street circuits, but most of them just don't work with F1 (although they are just fine when used by other series).


News about Hamilton today...unnamed source reported this to F1Live
"Lewis was in the Woking factory three weeks ago. He arrived by helicopter, had a conversation about two hours with the management and then left with a big smile on his face. He signed here, I can assure you. A seat fitting has not happened yet, but that will take place in the foreseeable future."

If true (and I have my doubts) the question is....will it be the Hamilton/Alonso reunion nobody thought would happen? We assume Button will be there next year due to his Honda link but his seat is up in the air too.
 
new round of rumors are (in order of current constructors championships standings):

Those last 4 teams not only haven't any confirmation on their lineup, but there are not even rumors regarding their drivers. It is not even confirmed that they will be in F1 next year.
 
crazy init, so much switching at the end of the season, maybe those last 4 teams are not gonna be in F1 next season and all the other teams gonna have 3 drivers. there was talk about this a while back, i believe bernie wants to do something like this.
hamilton going back to mclaren will be strange if that happens especially if he wins the WDC this season, and to be teammate to alonso, that'l be exciting no doubt. 2 of the best drivers on the grid imo, but it'l be a pointless move if mclaren is shit again but i hope they at the front next season and not battling force indias..
 
I'd prefer for Hamilton to stay put at Mercedes.

He made the right decision leaving McLaren, going back would be a step back.
 
Alexander Rossi will drive for Marussia as substitute for Bianchi. That is, if Marussia even will compete in Sochi. There are some reports that Marussia will not race in Sochi because of Bianchi's accident (they have already announced on their official page that their GP3 team won't race in Sochi)
