A retouched Georgia Straight cover that has made the rounds in Vancouver’s video-game industry doesn’t paint a rosy picture of the sector’s current state.

The original cover of the Straight’s January 29 issue depicts a tree bearing several game controllers and handheld consoles. Under the main front-page headline (“Tech tree”) is printed the words “Vancouver’s video-game sector sprouts many branches”.

The cover illustration, by Kristian Guevara, refers to Blaine Kyllo’s feature on the family tree that has been formed by the city’s video-game industry since its beginnings in the 1980s.

In the retouched cover image, the controllers and consoles are replaced by six logos of video-game companies and studios—and they’re on fire. The secondary headline now reads: “Vancouver’s video-game sector lost many branches”.

While the cover story chronicles the rise and growth of the city’s game-development studios, it also tells of their struggles. For instance, the feature notes that Nexon Publishing North America closed Humanature Studio on January 27 and a round of layoffs hit Electronic Arts’ Black Box studio on January 22. They are among the companies and studios represented in the retouched cover image.

The retouched cover was shared with the Straight by a local game producer, who said it was e-mailed around the day the story came out. The producer didn’t know who was behind the image.
