You're either missing the point or just deliberately being a blinkered Liverpool fan.

My point isn't about whether or not cursing into the camera warrants a certain punishment. That is neither here nor there.

My point is that the FA can only charge Rooney for breaking a certain rule. The rule he broke at no point specifies in what context the player is using foul and abusive language. He's broken a rule that states that a player can't curse on the pitch.

So has every other player in the history of the game.

A 2 match ban for swearing is not what I'd call appropriate.

Can't argue he should of been punished, because I think he should be, it was a stupid thing to do. But surely a fine would of sufficed, he's not hurt anyone here, only himself.

Lol guys you are incredible, especialy beachryan what does my comment have to do who i support?...i talk first of all my own thoughts not biased by media and definetly not becouse i´m supporting Liverpool.. as Liverpool supporter i care about my team not yours most of all...

I talk about this as i seen this in TV and i felt rather not pleasant.. Deffinetly it would be a shame to FA if the would NOT punish Rooney for that as it was offensive and TOWARDS the camera...there is not a place more for disscousion...

I personally think that it was a stupid act that he did....but as many have pointed out, there were past cases of swearing to the camera before, and I do not recall anyone being banned (definitly not for two games), maybe fined.

As he has apologized, wouldn't a fine be enough already??

Many do swear on the pitch and those go unpunished as it probably went off without people noticing, this was to camera so there was proof of it happening and thus he should be punished...but again, 2 games?? which of you feel that this is a 2 game ban and not just a fine??

I'm sorry that you found it unpleasant, to be honest I did too. My point is simply that the FA cannot charge someone with 'making someone feel unpleasant'.

There are rules, the breaking of which can result in a punishment. You can't just arbitrarily punish people for something that offends you.

Sigh. Never mind.

man this was not camera accidently taking his celebration and him swearing, it was him looking to the camera and being rude, that´t two very differen things.. i agree many swear, that´s undoubtly true, but as a proffesional player he should know how to behave...he was basicly speaking with the audience the same way as he did in his world cup outburst.. i think the ban is appropriate and i would say it in case of any players....who by the way should be rolemodels for young kids ...

Well the precedent has been set now, let's see the FA start banning players left, right and centre.

For what it's worth, I'd have fined him. A ban is ridiculous and if it happened to one of our players, I wouldn't be happy either. But a fine would be appropriate.

The FA are just completely inconsistent and they're only causing more problems in the game by banning the likes of Rooney for that incident while letting tons of other similar incidents carry on without a word being said.

The only case I can see is that he swore into the camera, so at the public really. If that's a ban, then surely if a linesman hears a player swear at their decision (which players always do) and the swearing is within earshot of the supporters at the ground, shouldn't those players also be banned? What's the difference between swearing into a camera and swearing within 10 metres of kids?

The FA has now opened a Pandora box. But the way I see it, nothing will change. They'll just make an example out of him, and that's it.

Still, with Berba and Hernandez upfront I'm not too worried. They've been playing together before and they've done really well. Looking forward to it actually. And at least it'll give Rooney some rest for those contests against Chelsea.

Our win % with Rooney is staggeringly higher than without. That said, we don't really deserve to win the league if we can't manage without one player at home against any team.

What scares me is that the FA have told Fergie that 'a greater profile brings greater responsibility' - which is just terrifying. So basically 'justice' to the FA is a factor of media hype. Lovely. Would still love it, LOVE IT if Fergie blanked the FA cup semi.

He deserved a 2 match ban, Geoff Hurst thinks it should be an automatic 5 match ban for using excessive bad language.

Didier Drogba got a ban for swearing at cameras (mixed with a bit of allegations).

Bad miss though for the City game mind you.

Haven't seen the incident, but if he directed it towards the audience it is a difference than just randomly swearing on the pitch or swearing at a certain person (reporter). Not defending it really, but I would understand how they think if this is the case.

So, erm, what - we should do what Geoff Hurst thinks? Lineker, Shearer and even Hansen said it's over and nothing more should be done. Good argument that.

Drogba's ban was for attempting to assault the referee, chase him down the tunnel and accuse him of cheating. Sick of people getting this wrong. He was not done for foul or abusive language, he was done for bringing the game into disrepute.

Anyway, what's done is done. Let's move on.

One rule for United.

Not too fussed to be honest about the Rooney thing, Meh, he'll miss Fulham at home and the City cup game, Berbatov's had a LONG rest if you want to call it that. More peeved of that our players have been blanked in the PFA Awards apart from Vidic.

Are you kidding? The FA are begging that United appeal, so they can show how tough they are and give Rooney a 3 game ban.

It's all political. The FA and the premier league were defending themselves in cabinet just today. They're on a charm offensive because the public have complained so much that it's reached government's attention.

So they're salivating over the opportunity to show how moral and rule-abiding they are. And they can't do that by punishing just any player for just any club. They need to punish the player all of the MPs will have heard of, and the biggest club in the league.

So on a day when they should be grilled over questions of why they let a Thai despot buy Man City or why the FA won't tell anyone who owns Leeds or why they allowed United and Liverpool to be bought with ridiculous debt, they instead can say look, we punished that mean Wayne Rooney player for cursing to the lil kids! That's right, we the FA punished the most famous player in the league for cursing. That's how powerful and just we are.

They disgust me the lot. Just above the media in the line of parasitic scabs that need scratching out of existence.

The best excuse I've heard is that Rooney was setting a bad example for the children.

Have these people not seen children nowadays? They swear more than anyone else, heck they have swear words that the rest of us don't even know!

Spot on J79 - we've appealed the length of the punishment. Which I say is fair enough, it's unprecedented and without comparison, so how they can argue it's sensible?

Well I was sitting watching the game and my little girl was playing with her Peppa Pig Toys and then later on I asked her to move something and she said "What, fucking what!!".

No offense, and I realise it's possible that this is true - but I can't honestly believe anyone with stories like that. I was watching it at home, with a wonderful sound system and I had no idea what he yelled until a few hours after the match when I saw a transcript. I knew the f-bomb was in there, but had no idea what else was.

But sounds like you and Graham Poll have something in common - pretty sure he also said that some kid was saying the same thing the day afterwards.

Weird how kids never say 'Football, bloody hell' anymore ;)

Anyway, today the FA will tell Rooney, right before kick off of the Chelsea match too, that he's been banned for an additional match because of the 'frivolous' nature of his appeal.

That's right, appealing an unprecedented punishment is considered frivolous. Not only that, it's considered frivolous before the 'mystery 3 person panel' has even convened to discuss it.

that might be true, but not all are like this + there is whole world watching so the players should have in mind there is some limits of how they should behave.. i agree it´s nothing for us..but for some younger 10-11 Rooney or others are gods, and everything they do- the younger do also..

i know there is passion in football and i totaly understand Rooney has more than enough of it...but FA is right for punishing him becouse in his case it´s not the first time he overreacted on pitch..

Did Giggs made simillar thing while celebrations..? i don´t think so..

Fowler did get 6 match ban for his famous celebration some years ago... this is nothing new..

You'll find it is, in fact, by definition unprecedented. Indeed, that's how the PFA have described it. Not wanting to flog the proverbial dead horse, but if it was comparable to Fowler or any other celebration, he would have been charged for breaking those rules. Not for foul and abusive language.

He is the only player to ever be banned for breaking that specific rule (at least in living memory). Hence, any punishment is unprecedented. Hence, something new.

Anyway, as kind as the FA are to tell the club at 6 what their decision is (the public don't know til tomorrow at 10) we do have a small match this evening, so can we move on please?

Could really of used Fletcher (What the hell is wrong with him anyway? I know it's said to be a virus) for this game, still worried about the power Chelsea have.

As long as we can keep the score low and grab a goal ourselves, I'll be very confident heading to Old Trafford.

we just don't seem to beat Chelsea. They're well setup to play against us, just one of those things. Bit like Liverpool. Not saying either team is better, but both are well prepared to counter the players we have.

I'm actually pretty worried we're going to get spanked tonight. I'm 100% sure that Torres is going to score. In fact, I'm going to go put a fiver on it :)
