Manchester United Thread

We'll never win the league in my life time, I've got used to that idea - unless we win the lottery like Chelsea/City/PSG etc.

I don't care about that. I just want us to actually, you know, challenge once in a while - we buy all these players every season yet never achieve anything.

Anyway, wrong thread for this convo.
 
I'm surprised not one of you is interested in Frank De Boer. I'd rather him than Van Gaal tbh. Not saying Gaal is bad though, not at all.

He's done a great job at Ajax, but is relatively unproven imo. We need someone with a giant ego and CV, to impress the players as much as anything.

Hit the nail on the head imho. We need a strong man to whip this bunch back together and make some overdue changes. Probably not a long term solution but as Van Gaal has shown before.. He s tremendous at setting the stage for future success.
 
Just hope our illustrious leaders don't screw this one up too. Van Gaal makes so much sense, and seems such a sensible option.

A player who has literally never managed before is suicidal. Surely no right-minded CEO would take that risk/allow it on his watch?

Sadly with United these days, I don't trust us to not hire Rafa Benitez, and be confused when fans seem upset.

Surely Simeone has made some heads turn after tonight, that run down the touchline was a fitting 10 year anniversary. :D

as would the possibility of a fresh young manager winning the domestic and Champions League double before moving onto a big job in England perhaps :THINK:

Let's say for the sake of argument that all what Benitez was completely false (it wasn't), so what ?

Things like that are silly mind games...

Will you react as stupid as the Chelsea fans ? I'm pretty convinced that Chelsea would have won silverware with Benitez this season...R>affa didvery well with them last season...

I just think Van Gaal is the right man for the job, he has a lot more character than Rafa and I think that's what the team needs during the next 2 or 3 seasons.

P.S. Gerd, that would be the fabulous Cheryl Cole. :SMUG:

Thoughts on Simeone vs Van Gaal, in my mind anyway that's the decision to be made (however it does look like LVG has got it with reports)

what he's accomplished is phenomenal, for Athletico to be where they are with Barcelona (lauded as one of the best teams ever) and Real Madrid (most expensive set of players assembled) to be top of La Liga and in the UCL Final, surely that's more impressive than Mourinho's Porto triumph.
 
I can't see Simeone being able to recreate this team again. The sheer intensity at which they play for me means they'll be a one season wonder at this 'elite' level.

His man management skills are clearly there - but with his players, with his team. Could he do it with uppity young gits like Rooney and so forth?

What he's done with Madrid is nothing short of astonishing, but I would definitely hold off to see if he can do it somewhere else first. Hell, I'd hold off and see if he can do it with Madrid again next season.

Also - why would he want to come to us?

As to Rafa: He's basically a RAWK member. Dunno what they put in the water up in Liverpool, but he's definitely drinking the Koolaid.
 
Van Gaal is clearly a very knowledgeable coach but he has a habit of creating a very bitter dressing room and is quickly ousted when things start to go wrong. eg. Barca and Bayern
He's like Mancini on steroids, no man management skills

Whatever happens, it won't be dull. My bet is that Rooney will be thrown out within a year

I think your underestimating our pull, I think if he wanted him he's gettable.

I see what your saying, could ge get 'superstars' to perform that way? well that's something you'll only really find out when on that stage really however he does have that Mourinho like 'aura' of the players going all out for him.

his managerial record (however) short has been supremely impressive so far, winning multiple trophies.

He can do! however the more positive spin is he's created the foundations for Barcelona and Bayern teams which went onto build on that.

I think the narrative that Rooney and Van Gaal are sure to not get on is just silly but we'll see.

I personally think he'll love Rooney, he's a 'total footballer' which is apart of his philosophy , it's were he fits him and RVP into the setup though that will determine things.

Most combined goals/assists of any player in the prem in the last 5 years.

This year, when he's in a woeful team playing woefully, has 2nd combined assist/goals in the prem, behind Suarez.

His touch is overrated. He's not one of the 5 best players in the world in any given year, though over the past decade I'd put him in the top 10.

He's not getting paid as much as the tabloids have said - in fact the 'best' journalists say he took a pay cut from United itself, with more room for growth from personal sponsorships.

I'll never understand the overrated tag.
 
He is not overrated,he is underrated for what he did with United.
But this said, if he is an obstacle to rebuild the team, then he should get no mercy whatsoever...

Totally agree with this. A very optimistic part of me thinks Van Gaal would be exactly what Rooney needs. He won't put with Wayne's crap, and if Rooney could actually get himself focussed for a whole season - put in the preseason and extra training and what not - I really believe him to be an excellent footballer.

Ferguson pandered to Rooney because he had to - the squad was threadbare without him in 2010. But I think Rooney might need a disciplinarian type coach to get the best out of him.
 
Think we re forgetting the importance of the backroom staff a bit. Van Gaal may not be the most personable guy in the world but he doesn't need to be if he takes on the likes of Giggs or even one of VGs current assistants w the Dutch Natl team like Patrick Kluivert. You know..proven ex players who ve won a lot and appear to be well liked and relatable for the players.
 
Rooney is overrated in the sense that PSD overrates him, but Rooney is a fairly smart footballer which PES related stats can't portray. Comparable to Maradona in a sense, a complete idiot with a football brain. Rooney is a great player and a match winner if the coach is able to bring out the potential.

I don't even like Rooney, but I'm not blind. What gerd said is spot on in my opinion.

His trophy cabinet over the last 10 years is definitely one of the fullest!
 
I think he offends me because he's so ugly. Same with that kid at Liverpool, I swear, he's the ugliest player ever to grace a football pitch. He looks like a lost squirrel.
 
in terms of players I think it's vital we sign a world class winger, we lack pace in our side (pace and quality combined anyway :P)

While CM is probably just as big an issue I can see a couple of targets (Kroos, Rakitic, Fabregas etc) being potentially available I think it would be much more difficult targeting that wide man with the necessary quality required.

Reus is pretty much top of the list for me, we should really go all out to make him our number one target IMO

after him there our potential available players like Lucas Moura who could be available and maybe others but wouldn't possess the ready made qualities of a Reus at this stage.

watching us play this season without having that someone who stretches defences and offer what has been one of our main assets which is counter attacking play has hurt us big time IMO

As well as being that outlet we've missed, as we saw in that 2009 team, our midfield wasn't the best even then but the quality of a Ronaldo to push teams back gave us that breathing space in the middle of the park.
