The Retro-PES Corner

I finished season 1 of ML playing one of the worst teams in J.LEAGUE 2, ending the season in 6th place out of 15. It's a pleasant struggle because I don't feel like I'm being cheated by the AI. Buying a Brazilian defender who dominates with his height was crucial to get out of from the bottom 5 (and 3 different formation variants lol).

Halfway through the season, I came up with the idea of recording the different goals I scored and conceded (but i only managed to record a few to be fair lol), mainly from average to nice ones.

Below is a mini montage, the goal ratio between me and the AI is around 50%, I encourage everyone to try this version :)

Ooh, great game. I remember being club world champion with Sagan Tosu over Arsenal in my ML (idk what's more ironic, Sagan or Arsenal going all the way. Specially the latter one, they had just lost Henry). Be a Legend Mode (FANTASISTA, as it is called in J.League 2007~2010 spin offs) is rather raw, camera felt very invasive in the change of directions, which is very frustrating if you're a CF with low dribbling stats...

Hello, does anybody knows if there is a way to Wii's Pro Evolution Soccer games? It was brought to my attention through this Chroo video:

Apart from the fabric texture that seemed different, the fact that it has licensed boots, a feature PS2 and PSP, my favorite platforms, does not possess. That alone got me just like that Di Caprio gif.

thats-it-yes-thats-it.gif

But what got me through the roof is the fact that Robbie Fowler, my personal goat, has got what I consider to be his face yet (He featured until 2010 editions of KONAMI's games and only returned in PES2017~19, that is considering officially and fake name as well).

Looking at these pictures, his the first one looks like someone tried to suck his soul out of him (I think this one first appeared in PES 4), while the last one gets it in the perfect balance of being a limited polygonal representation of his facial traces. Eyes, nose, mouth, skin and jawline are the ones that got me admiring the simplicity and yet beautiful result of this work.

face'06.pngface'10.png

While for the boots, we have around 15 licensed options, although the model is not exactly perfect model, it is very nice to have these in a game with PS2 graphics...

boot.pngnot perfect.png

Well, that's pretty much what I had to say. It would be just perfect to be able to import this face in PS2 games. For now, I'll just enjoy it in a Wii emulator, which turns out to be not that bad, it's possible to play traditionally as well.

There is a lag in corners and free kicks in some games like We8le, We9, We9le with OPL on PS2. Does anyone have a solution?

Are you playing on the PS3? I'd like to be able to play it on RPCS3. The vanilla game is all glitched, so I don't think it would be that easy to play... Also, does it have a Be a Legend Mode? I can't imagine how immersive it would be to start in J2 League and go to the top with a japanese team and internationally as well.
What is vanilla game?

I play on my PS3 yes

I don't have much information about the emulator , but if you can install pkgs, add game data in folders, you'll be able to play it !

Well unfortunately the version I have doesn't include become a legend in the j league(I'll check and update you because I don't play become a legend but I'll update you).. we 2013 has removed enough modes from the previous titles (league mode, community mode etc), you can play that in we2012 (I think) , and in j league winning eleven on ps2 in "fantasista mode" if I can remember
But in we2013 you only have exhibition and master league for j league , but it has a lot of benefits I included them in my earlier post , even yesterday I played I think 40 j league matches ! , I enjoyed it so much , also for ps2 j league we 2008 is a true masterpiece ! , I played it for 5 hours couple of days ago! , I never played this much time in a game ! .. since I began to play pes or we it was just a 5 min match per day or some matches with friends but those two games specifically made me play a lot !
For me we2012 and 2013 j league mode on ps3 and jlwe2008 on ps2 are the best games ever made and it's so addictive and fun to play!

Hi all. Just to say I’m in love with WE2008 PS2. Over the last few months, playing mostly with friends but with a few solo plays, I’ve been moving from WE9LE to WE2008. There is so much variety, in both single and multi player, it really is the complete or “lost” version. It is slower than PES2008, albeit only a little, but it makes for a more curated game. You have to think a little more to break down a defence or sit back to hold off the opponent’s attack. I’ve just lost my latest game 0-1, I’m Barcelona against SBV Excelsior, and I’ve lost against the run of play to a lob. Usually I’d feel cheated but the goal was pure bliss, and I was only too happy to think “fair play” the CPU had sat back, defended well and hit me on the break. On a weekend where some would have forked £100+ for the latest FIFA / EA ultimate whatever, I’m in football gaming nirvana! Thank you @geeeeee for raising PES2008’s profile and @Juventino32 for specifically WE2008’s! Absolutely humbled 🙏
Welcome to the club. Only true WE/PES connoisseur's need apply.
Its the goal of our exclusive club to educate the PES 5 & 6 purists about the wonders they have forsaken 😄

Ha thanks. In fairness, PES5 has given me some fantastic memories! A first love in many ways 😍
You misunderstane me. I wasn't saying PES 5 and PES 6 are bad games. PES 5 & 6 are amongst the greatest football games ever made, that's for sure. What I'm saying is, that PES 2008 on PS2 is a cut above and got lost in the mix and not even tried by a lot of people because they associate it with that PS3/PC abomination. Anyone who has put some time in with 2008 the PS2 version (I mean not just a quick play to see what it's like) will come to the conclusion that 2008 on PS2 is basically a more polished version of PES 6 with tighter controls, better passing, better shooting and better AI.
2009 on PS2 is similar but I feel it's a slight step backwards. 2008 on PS2 is the sweet spot in my opinion.

Completely agree 👍. Yes the AI in the competitive modes is even better than on friendly matches. I’ve lost to Saudi Arabia and UAE a fair few times already on World Tour for example (yet another plus about 2008 that mode!).

Shame about 2009, it looks great but the AI just dribbles straight through the middle. Same with 10, 11, 12, 13 and even 14 although I feel they mix it up a bit more in the last game.

I’d love to get the 2010 soundtrack onto 2008 one day.

Its lovely to see how the PES 2008 movement grows every day lol

The J.League version is an absolute peach, as we are on the 2008 topic, which difficulty is your go to option?

Well I say 2008 but it's Winning Eleven 2008 that I slightly prefer over PES 2008. Not sure why but it just feels a slight bit more refined. On that I play on Superstar which is the same or maybe a tiny bit easier than Top player on PES 2008. Sometimes I drop it down a level if just want a chill time rather than a furious battle every match. You can't really go wrong with either though, including J League.
How about yourself?

To me even the Ps3 version was not in 2007 what we were waiting for (a game changer) but they're far from being abomination. Just out 3-4 years too late...
We remember the deception we got in comparison to Fifa 08 and his new smooth engine plenty of animation, what we waited for PES was done by his concurrent. But we got one thing now as all of those games are now, old : the recoil, after the 30+ version we played.

It was a Ps2 HD PES with enhanced graphics, perhaps too enhanced for the engine, players models and level of details etc., but it's a very fun game, same as PES 2009 (a bit too fast but enjoyable and more defensive).

Now, if the didn't changed too much the models like in PES 6 on X360, movement wouldn't have looks that rigid. It was and still my favorite HD PS2-Like version on the pitch, way better than his PS2 counterpart. I remember playing online with the PC version and the 360 version, score where tight on 360 but "tennis-ish" on PC, vanilla of course. With a real edit mode i would rank that version on my top 5, but all was too limited to edit.

Still, i spend too much good time to play that "ufo" version online in comparison to his older PS2 brother instead of trowing my controller on the wall (so yes, it was better than the original PES 6 vanilla PC or PS2 at least on VS human).

More inertia, slower, PES5 balance with PES6 mechanics : a game appart. Like i can't rank neither 2008-2009 from debut X console generation era. They feel different.

Now it's obvious than real Ps2 version were built as a whole and better. I'm also in love with WE 2008, and even more than his J-league brother (like @Juventino32 said : the issue is that there's no NT and he's right. JL2008 was more built for ML or League mode. But we f***ing love doing a Continental or World Cup time to time too)

Hey guys , this is specially for j league fans ! and since I didn't find any videos about japanese player stats for we2012 or 2013

I uploaded exploring all faces of j1 and j2 for winning eleven 2013 j league dlc ! , it took me a long time and my hands and arms were tired 😂 but it was worth it , since every player is literally so detailed including having his own id , real face and everything!

Part 1 stands for division 1
Part 2 stands for division 2

I can't say I share this in the suitable thread but I think it is !
Enjoy !

Nice! Great work. They did some of the players badly there, Sato Hisato and Okubo Yoshito should have a bigger overall, heck they're not all time leading top scorers for nothing. Apart from that here's the (arguably) japanese goat. I remember him being the biggest LIAR in virtual football. In real life he was banging ~3 goals in a handful of games, which is normal, he's a veteran, but in J.League 2008 and 2009, he used to bang 20 to 27 goals, having a league top scorer season. I got curious, and so searched for some of his goals at the time, very few, but, in 2009 he had two goals, one in favor and the other was an own goal. While in the PS2 spin-off he was topping the charts.

Watched a couple of videos of PES 2009 and while the CPU dribbles a lot, it’s not as much as I remember. The menus look great, the text is better and the ball physics look really good (less than 5 but more than 2008 maybe).

Has anyone played 2009 (PS2) for a lengthy period of time and would like to give their thoughts?

Try top player even on we2008. It could be harder than superstar, depending how your playing style.
On top player it's like pes2008 one, with a lot of pressing and caos. Superstar have a better positioning but is less aggressive.
Anyways both we and Pes 2008 are great but, to me, except A.i, are too much streamlined compared to we9le in almost everything.
Even if in 2008 games players have less inertia They are both way better than pes6, because defending a.i is too much weak on 6.
My personal ranking Is:

-We9le: best physicalty, inertia, fouls, First touch and defending a.i.
I love shooting too

-we10le: improved pes6 defensive a.i, i love the shooting (my favorite) and passing. Dribbling is more arcadish than we9le but there is still inertia and not enough skilled player lose close control while sprint and change direction like on pes2008/we 2008.
In my opinion It's the best for local multiplayer.

-we2008: it does everything good, It is very polished and balanced but too me it starts to be streamlined.

I've played them all for lengthy periods of time and my opinion is that 2009 is a slight step backwards. In terms of control and generally overall gameplay. Again, not saying it's a bad game because it's not. It's a great game, but 2008 is better.

@simogto90
These games aren't new to me, I've played them all heavily. Superstar on WE2008 is obviously more difficult than Top Player on WE2008. Superstar is the hardest level selectable on WE2008. As I've mentioned previously I sometimes drop it down a level for a chill game, aka Top player.
Superstar on WE2008 I find that it's a miniscule bit easier than Top player on PES 2008 but the difference is practically unnoticeable.

is it me, or that i feel that PES 4 has that "every match different" much better than any of the later iterations, i remember i really enjoyed the smoother player movement, ball physics and general feel of pes 4 compared to the ones after, i remember i used to play with barcelona, and literally every match felt different, harder to score, sometimes easier with 3-0 and 4-1 wins, and sometimes scrapping to get that 1-0 win at home, it just felt really satisfying playing pes 4

Its a really fun game, with a pretty alright AI, but i reckon it got overshadowed by PES 3 and PES 5.
My only gripe with that game was the way you could easily creates chances by playing 2 strikers up and doing one two's. Still, the liveware version is worth checking out as it has a nice mix of PES 3 and PES 5.

For me, WE8LE is undoubtedly the best game. It offers dynamic positional attacks and thrilling counterattacks, showcasing various facets of a match. The goalkeepers are exceptional, and the game includes realistic falls without fouls, though fouls do happen. The set pieces are brilliant, with players making well-timed runs into the penalty area. The ball physics are impressive, and the tactical depth is outstanding. Playing in a 21:9 resolution provides a wider view of the pitch, making the game look stunning. The pace is neither too fast nor too slow—perfectly balanced for me. Beyond that, I also love WE7I, WE9JL, and JLWE2010, but WE8LE reigns supreme for me.

I totally agree PES 2008 - Original Season (PS2) is the best after 3 months to compare with PES 5,6 and WE 9,10 PS2. On the other side, PES 2008 is not good under PS3 and PC version.

I feel PES 6 or any ported PES to PC from PES 3 to PES 2008 is not good as PS2 version in terms of gameplay (not counting for kitserver features, enhanced graphics, a large collection of stadiums, balls, adboards of PES PC). Anyone here feel the same with me? Hope you could share your experience. Thanks!

Is anyone here a fan of Blue Lock? I read a bit of the manga lately to catch up, and watched the 2nd season of the anime, and it got me in the mood for a video game, though there aren't any from what I know... so I played Winning Eleven 2000, which has a mode for the 2000's Olympics, where you can play as Japan. Of course it's not the same, but it was enough for me, especially with how fun PS1 Winning Eleven still plays, I definitely recommend this one.
Could you share this modded iso? Thanks a lot

Very fun game too, but after some weeks you can feel frustation with all the bugs from that game.
Short terms version to me, if you want the same sensations but ultra corrected WE8le is your friend ;)

It's kinda like PES4, but in reverse : the more you play the more you get into it and appreciate that version.
I never said it's a superb game but far from an abomination if you give it a chance.

Otherwhise there's one thing i'm asking myself and i don't think i'm wrong : Konami said that TEAMVISION was only on New gen version. But when i play WE 2008 or PES 2008, the AI adapt, same as teamvision was supposed to do, the way you play.
To me, it's a lie that there's no Teamvision on PES 2008 to say "hey, it's not the same game, An AI that smart can be built on PS2.

That version got the most advanced AI from the whole series and got the exact same features as Teamvision. Or should we can call it then?

Another thing : after 07-08 all version all the others version aren't interesting and repetitive too me. The PES teams for old gen version focused on Psp and ported to PS2. Ball physics for example and stats feeling is far from what you can feel on 2007-2008 versions.

But there's some hidden gems as the team probably worked all togheter to create some version : WE 2010 Aoki on PS2 and two pretty special version looking like no other PES, 2013 and 2014. I retried the 2013 and the feeling is beeter than 2014 to me, on PS2.

Also the 3DS version with 360 degree movement since PES 2011 version (not 16 directions or 31, you can litterealy turn very slowly degree to degree, no joke : then the game was done for BAL type of gameplay regarding 3DS immersive relief capacities.

No joke i found those version harder to dribble a man than 8 directions versions lol, perhaps it's the WTF effect the reason, no idea but yes, it's a bit or a lot confusing.
