The Retro-PES Corner

Is anyone here a fan of Blue Lock? I read a bit of the manga lately to catch up, and watched the 2nd season of the anime, and it got me in the mood for a video game, though there aren't any from what I know... so I played Winning Eleven 2000, which has a mode for the 2000's Olympics, where you can play as Japan. Of course it's not the same, but it was enough for me, especially with how fun PS1 Winning Eleven still plays, I definitely recommend this one.
Kudos to you for watching through the entire 2nd season, I've heard horrible things about it. But yeah it's kind of a missed opportunity that there isn't a video game for Blue Lock, I think it would sell very well considering how well the manga and anime did.

Indeed, the animation was rough early on, the studio didn't give animators enough time at all, but the later episodes saw and upgrade which made them a lot better to watch, I hope they improve the overall standard in the future and give their animators proper time and working conditions, they can clearly pull off some great animation. We have a few Captain Tsubasa video games, I'm sure a Blue Lock one would be great, maybe there's some mod/patch for old Winning Eleven titles but I haven't looked for it, anyways Winning Eleven 2000 sort of scratched that itch for me, though of course the real deal would rock.

There's an option file for PES 21 that brings in content from Blue Lock, you might be interested in it. Here's the link.

Has anyone else noticed that when sprinting PES 5-6 does have 360 degree movement? Normal movement yes is locked to one of the 8 directions but I’ve noticed if I get the player going on a run straight east and hold sprint, then angle with analog stick just slightly south of east he will take dribbles that are between east and southeast, not locked to one of 8 directions. First, has anyone else noticed this? Second, if so, then could this be reverse engineered to allow 360 degree movement for all movement, not just sprint?

IIRC there are 16 directions during sprinting instead of 360 degree movement, and it is not necessary to use analog stick - the digital arrow keys can also used to re-produce this. These 16-direction movement was removed in next gen (i.e. starting from WE2008 on PS3/PC/X360, not sure about PES6 on X360).

My second idea for PES 5-6 is to implement manual passing similar to the modern titles. I think we can all agree that the right stick R3 passing is very awkward. Perhaps if the left stick was also mapped to right stick and X was mapped to R3, then the manual passing would be similar to modern? It seems this would not be possible with the standard settings controller mapping.

Have you tried it ?
Not yet. I looked for about 10 minutes today and standard button mapping on my Legion Go doesn’t allow it. Button mappings must be one for one and my ideal solution is left analog in any direction results in both left and right analog in that direction. Swapping X for R3 might make menu navigation difficult.

I've read all your ideas and your ideas would change the gameplay completely. If all those ideas got implemented then it wouldn't be PES 5 or PES 6 any longer. By the sounds of it you'd be much happier just playing a modern football game since it has all that you have described

I understand how it might seem like that. I have played the modern titles and while I do enjoy aspects of them, they feel a little hollow - they lack the soul, passion and vibe of PES 5/6.

I disagree that my ideas would make it an entirely different game. The game already has these features. I’m only seeking to make them more readily available.

Yeah very true the modern football games lack soul.
You mentioned 360 degree movement being implemented, that would change the PES 5/6 gameplay entirely. They would basically become completely different games.
The other thing about manual passing can surely just be mapped anyway.

I managed to workaround the 60fps limit of PES/WE through frame interpolation using Lossless Scaling Frame Generation (LSFG).

Details about that here:

I play it in 120fps now on 120Hz monitor & it looks so good!

I'll quote the post from the thread down below for 120fps video gameplay:
Here's how the gameplay looks like in 120fps with LSFG:

Gameplay video

You need to download the video & view it in local video player, as Google Drive video playback is compressed & in 30fps.

You also need to have the high refresh rate screen (ideally >=120Hz) to view the video faithfully, although anything higher than 60Hz should look smoother than the usual 60fps.

I had a blast playing the World Cup 1958 with this patch: Thread 'FIFA WORLD CUP 1958 (RELEASED)' https://evoweb.uk/threads/fifa-world-cup-1958-released.92605/

The semifinal between Brazil and France reminded me of their game in World Cup 1986, and the final was even better. These were two of the best games I ever played.

The patch is very well made and plays great. I first needed to get used to the tactics as all teams play with 4 or 5 forwards.

I made a video of the highlights of the semifinals and final here:

A few days ago, I discovered J-League Winning Eleven 2008 - Club Championship edited by @BillyKong (who, in my opinion, is an absolute treasure of this community). https://evoweb.uk/threads/the-retro-pes-corner.78697/page-489#post-3907586

It is by far the most complete football game on PS2 (PES 3 and PES 4 refuur are very close behind, in my opinion, of course). The AI is better than in the original PES 2008 because they don't try to dribble the entire field with one player. The atmosphere and fan chants are absolutely great here.

But this post isn't about that lol, I noticed @BillyKong that the widescreen patch you included isnt working properly.
The players disappear just before the edge of the screen, which is caused by the edited camera (it's absolutely great, btw),

I decided to try and fix it -

// Render fix (42091746 803f053c)
patch=1,EE,00125b0c,word,3c053FC1 //3c053F80 ,

the problem is no longer active with this line changed.

If you want, you can add the updated patch to your original post, although I think this edited WE title deserves a separate post so that more people will notice it.

Thank you so much for your kind words. I had originally added a widescreen patch with the correct render fix but when someone requested a version of the game for original PS2 hardware I must have mistakenly swapped the widescreen patch for the new zoomed out camera with the standard widescreen patch. Thanks for providing a solution.

Get ready in the next week I will be uploading a version 2.0 of that patch that will be a major upgrade!

Thats awesome! will be looking out for it :)

Anyone got a good gameplay tutorial for PES 5 or 6? I know the basics and I’ve watched the secret controls videos but I’m looking more for fundamentals, like how to position for headers on goal kicks (is it even possible) and most effective tackling techniques (running into the player, jockey, super cancel?).

Has anyone tested Winning Eleven 2010 Club Champions on PS2? To my surprise, it's even better than 2008 on PS2 in terms of AI. It plays more varied games and I think it's more difficult than 2008 itself.

Hello, does anyone actually know if a player gets a stats decrease when playing in any of his secondary positions compared to his (one) primary position? I'm asking here for PES 6

The shot power attribute doesn't only impact the clearance and the shot toward the goal it also has an impact of power of the long pass right !

Not sure where I read this, probably on a guide.

After some delays due to bug fixing the option file, here is J.League Winning Eleven 2007 Club Championship fully patched and translated into English.
Originally released in Japan on August 2nd 2007 as a PlayStation 2 exclusive - JLWE2007CC represents in some ways a Final Evolution version of PES 6 with gameplay being a mixture of PES 6 and PES 2008 (which was released only a couple of months after). The game is also the first one in the series to offer a Fantasista or Become a Legend mode.

Download link:

https://sharemods.com/ots8susrarbj/J.League_Winning_Eleven_2007_Club_Championship.zip.html

Patch Details:
  • Fully translated from Japanese into English. I took the base of Fernando's v1.5 English translation and added further English translated text to hundreds of untranslated strings. This was done with a combination of Google and Apple translation apps. Please note due to the nature of the computational translation software, there may be some sentences that do not make grammatical or contextual sense, and in some instances text may appear outside of their respective boxes due to word count and text size not being fully observed due to translating from Japanese to English, but for the most part you will be able to understand and read the text fine. Huge props to Fernando as this must have taken ages back in the day without these kinds of apps.
  • Imported club emblems, league and competition logos, balls, adboards, textures, banners, scoreboards and turf from an assortment of different patches including from the following teams: Wendetta, Brazukas and WE11 teams.
  • Additional sound files e.g. UEFA Champions League theme for competitions and PES 3 highlight theme for replay playback.
  • Option file kits based on @vialli82 and Wendetta option file, further updated with improvements and assignments as well as brand sponsors - Please note kits may not be 100% accurate due to logo import restrictions and other factors.
I want to give thanks to the following people:

@fernando - for his amazing translation that was used as a base and for all his hard work in previous patches over the last 20 years.
@vialli82 - for his fantastic option file that he worked on and improved and for his importing of faces and testing.
@marqisspes6 - for helping to support us with the development of an Option File editor for the J.League versions of Winning Eleven.
@morodolarama1 - for helping me by providing a partial AFS map for the game.
@Shales - for his support and providing downloads for a large number of previous titles.
@kerim - for offering to help link kits.

Please download the latest nightly build of PCSX2 from here:

https://pcsx2.net/downloads/#nightly-anchor - Select the QT AVX2 release for Windows 10/11.

Ensure you apply the included Widescreen Patch to the appropriate folder in PCSX2 (I believe its cheats_ws and ensure 16:9 aspect ratio as well as cheats and widescreen patches are enabled in the emulator settings). You will know the widescreen patch has been applied properly as you will see a popup in the top left corner saying '4 widescreen patches enabled'. Without this you will end up playing the game in stretched 16:9 and this causes the game to play at a higher speed than normal. Also ensure Optimal Frame Pacing is turned on to reduce any input latency.

To import save file data and option files to your virtual PCSX2 memory card please download MyMc from here:

http://www.csclub.uwaterloo.ca:11068/mymc/
bro you have new link for this is file option please ?
