I don't think his contract needs any extension right now. It goes until 2015 according to Arseblog.

He apparently just confirmed Barca's interest, but said he's happy right now at Arsenal. Which is the right thing to do for the moment. Even if he wanted badly to go, he's in no position to do anything, with 3 years left in his contract.

It doesn't mean it won't be an issue in the next couple of seasons, Darren Dean being his agent and all that.
 
Yes, it wouldn't be good for him. He would be so frustrated sitting on the bench and being a mere replacement for Busquetas.

It's not because it's Arsenal, even if Song was in a rival team I would give him the same advice if I could. Don't mess up with something that's going in the right direction. It's such a gamble to leave to a huge club where you wouldn't play regularly, when you could stay where your football is flourishing and you're becoming better and better each day.

I hope Song will have realised by now that Arsene Wenger isn't just an ordinary manager. Hleb learned it and won't have a second shot.

Negotiations have stalled while Wenger tries to work out that the phone has been hung up.. I'd imagine he's sat in his office saying "urmmm yes, urrrmmmmm are you there? Urrmmmm sign the urmmm, the urmmm, Dutch Cunt already, ferguson? Urmmm where are you?" and repeat!

It is not ideal, but can any team (Apart from Chelsea/Man City) really just throw away 20-25 million? Because if we keep him then that is what we are effectively doing. Plus keeping an unhappy player in our team and all of the disruptions that will bring.

It looks like Man United are the only team interested in him at the moment, which is strange? But I think Van Persie thought there would be a lot more interest as well. That is why he said what he said.

Anyway, me personally would rather keep him than sell him to Man United, or sell him abroad for 10million less. But there was Juventus and now their interest has gone away?

So it is tricky, but selling your best striker (one of the best strikers in Europe at the moment) to one of your main rivals is never wise.

Oh well, whatever happens, I still think our squad will be strong enough to mount a challenge for silverwear this season. I am really looking forward to it :DD

I would love to keep Van Persie and if Giroud and Podolski play so well, we hardly use Van Persie, maybe for cup games etc. It will be nice to see him sweating on the subs bench fora long while. But that would never happen, if we keep him, he will be playing I'm sure of that.

I agree with jonney, you don't sell a player like RvP to a rival for any amount of money.

You remember when Heinze tried to orchestrate a move from United to Liverpool and Fergie eventually worked a deal to send him to Real? That's exactly the reason why you can't send Van Persie to Fergie's red scum now, draw it out and ship him abroad for a decent fee. Out of our hair and out of the league.

Reality is that Van Persie is a guy that has been living in England for many years and his family have been living there as well and are growing up. Maybe they want to stay in England?

As I said also, is there a team abroad that wants him and is willing to pay the money for a player whos contract runs out in a year?

It is a lot more complicated, it looks like at the moment, the two options are sell him to Man United, or keep him for a year and lose millions of pounds? and like it or not Arsenal is a business and what business can afford to lose millions of pounds?

Anyway, as I said I would rather we lost millions and keep him for the season, but then we might lose millions and then he goes to Man United for free anyway in a year. So we are losing millions, just to stop him going to Man United for a year? and keeping an unhappy player with us, that the fans don't really like anymore and his motivation will be questionable.

Lots of stuff to think about.

As for RvP's family living in England, tough. RvP made very clear that it's a business, so agree a fee with Juve, Milan, Real or Barca. I don't give two fucks about his personal life as he doesn't give any about the club.

Like I said, I'd take a discounted fee from a foreign club. Someone has to have the foresight to recognize that 10-15 million on Van Persie could go a long way to secure their domestic title and success in Europe.

It has happened before: Heinze was all set for a move to Liverpool and Ferguson rejected their bid and put together a deal with Real.
 
Making rivals stronger is never good, Wenger must realise this. Even if we lose £20m in the end, how many times did we make massive profits before? Vieira, Fabregas, Henry... I think we can afford to waste this money for a good cause - which is essentially not strengthening one of our main rivals.

I'd send Squilaci to United, to repay for the Sylvester deal :D

Anyway, good things come to those who wait, I suppose. What do you know, maybe in the last hour of the transfer window, that PSG bloke decides to show off and drop some £25m on our lap? Or $ity, let's not forget how happy they would be to ruin a transfer deal for Man U.
Arsenal did the right thing and is loaded with strikers. We're not in a rush to sell. Leave all the worrying to Van Persil and Fergie.

Plus, we have other real worries with Song now. We don't count on RvP anymore, but with Song it's different. In practical terms, he's our only DM, and one of the best in the league BTW.
Now Barca seems to be gearing up their interest in him. Some sources say that Wenger is considering to sell him for over 15m. He would be crazy to do it at this point in time, unless he has a real substitute lined up (e.g. Fellaini)

But what pisses me off the most is Barcelona waiting until now (we're 4 days from starting the season) to negotiate for a player who still has 3 years left in his contract. Fuck right off. If I were Arsene I'd leave them waiting for 2 hours in the reception, only to have an assistant tell them unfortunately I'm too busy. And hand out a note: "Go fuck yourselves with a machete and come back next year, July 1st. Regards."

Man Utd are not your rivals anymore.

Spurs, Newcastle, Chelsea, Liverpool are your rivals for 3rd and 4th place these days.

Man Utd and Man City are in their own league...

You make it sound like we can just put him at any club we want him to go to? which is strange, Van Persie has a choice, we can't force him to go abroad.

Just because Ferguson did it with Heinze, doesn't mean that the circumstances are the same in this situation. I am sure if Real Madrid wanted Van Persie, then Van Persie would be more willing to go there and Wenger would be much more willing to sell him there.

But the circumstances are completely different and Van Persie has a choice in where he wants to go.
 
Yeah I don't get some of the claims here how you don't want to strengthen a rival in Manchester United but Manchester City are just fine. You do realize their the Premiership Champions and what helped them make that leap so quick was Arsenal consistently selling them some of their best players so another one of your best players to the Champions is just fine as were competition but City aren't?

Maybe because they have ridiculous attackers anyway that another one can't really help them that much, where as Van Persie to Man United would strengthen Man United much more than he would City. That is the only reasoning I can see, but it still isn't great reasoning. Selling to anybody in the Prem just isn't a good thing full stop.

At the end of the day, City can only field 11 players. They are the ones who paid £25m for bloody Nasri in his final year of contract. They're the ones skewing the market, so if Nasri cost £25m, surely the best striker in England and Premier League top scorer should cost more?

I admit I wouldn't be too bothered to sell him to City, because they're a loyal customer :P
If Arsenal had a Loyalty Card like Nando's, now it would be the time for City to buy RvP and get the whole Diaby for free :LOL:

On a more serious note, my logic is that if we sell the league's best striker to United, one season after selling Nasri to City, then next thing we know Chelski will come raiding our squad next season. This is getting ridiculous, we can't go on spreading our best talent evenly to our biggest rivals.
With City, at least they make it worth our while with crazy ££££. They don't really care about money. And as I understand, Ferguson is trying to haggle his way to a great deal for the League's top scorer. Play hard ball, Wenger!

I'm sick and tired of seeing our best players being systematically tapped up, lured away and raided as if we were a Boxing Day shopping window. This has to stop. We cannot be pushed around by players and their agents. And if we have to make an example out of someone, there's no one better than Van Persie. The guy released a statement to make Arsenal lose money on his deal. We don't have to show any sympathy for him. We got cover for his position already. Now let's hold on for the highest bidder until 11:59 on August 31st.
If no deal happens, he will see out his contract and he better be professional about it! If he's not, then he could find himself training with reserves and playing the Carling Cup. Then he wouldn't be looking too good in the eyes of potential future employers (United, City and Co).
I bet he didn't envisage this situation when he released his statement, but there you go. Arsene Wenger is a good man and he probably wouldn't put someone's career in jeopardy, but we never know how much shit a man can take.

but at the same time, nasri is on the better side of 20's than van persie and besides, apart from that season there, when has van persie been able to finish a season without an injury?
 
£24m is great business for Arsenal.

I don't want RvP at United. Not the player we needed, at not the cost we needed and now Welbeck might well leave. Such a shame.

No idea what Fergie is playing at.
 
With one year remaining on his contract, £24m is a very good piece business by Arsenal I have to say.Still very excited to see Van Persie, Rooney,Kagawa,Nani all play together
 
Well I hope Van Persie does really badly at Man United, that is all we can hope for. I never like to wish injury on a player and I don't now, but if he does get injured in this season, then I wouldn't be unhappy. Which is a big shame, because I thought if he ever did move on I would wish him all the best. But his comments just blew that out of the water...and plus the fact he is joining Man United.

24million for a 29 year old with a year left on his contract isn't the worst business done by any means, but selling him to title rivals is bad, I just hope it doesn't come back to bite us...which he probably will.

Such a sad end to his time at Arsenal :((

The harsh truth is that with this signing (and Nasri/Clichy going to City last season), it shows that Arsenal aren't considering themselves as title contenders

I don't think so, What does a team/manager do if a player wants to leave? We can't keep players with us and even if we could, there is no point keeping a player that isn't fighting for Arsenal. It is catch 22 they want to leave because we are not winning things, but we need to keep players to win things.

We need to find the right balance of players that want to stay at Arsenal and that are very good, I think we are building that up at the moment, plus buying players at near their peak on good contracts, so we have them for their better years.

If Man United don't consider us as title rivals, then more fool them. That could be great for us this season if they underestimate us.

As for Wenger selling him to Man United because he doesn't think we are title contenders I think that is laughable to be honest.

We have sold a few of our quality players in the last couple of years, because we haven't been winning things, but those players were with us while we were not winning things, so was it that bad to let them go?

Selling Van Persie and getting in the 3 players we have could be a blessing as we will hopefully have more options of getting goals from more people this season.

We need to get some silverwear though, otherwise we will keep losing our better players, but it is a fine line in winning and losing, we just need to hope it all comes together for us.

Song will probably go as as well, but as long as we get a replacement, I can see alot of positives from it, like a fresh start. Our team needed a bit of a clear out and some fresh enthusiasm, which if you see reports of our training camp and preseason, out squad all look very content, happy and get along with each other very well, which bodes well.

Even if Song goes as well (Who I don't think is as vital to us as some like to point out) I still have hope for this season. With so many newcomers, maybe the league is a stretch, but we will be up there fighting for it and hopefully for the other honours as well.

I think Man Utd and Arsenal are rivals, or at least were rivals prior to this. You look at the Premier League and the ages of the teams and areas of weaknesses etc, and I can't really see any team being as strong as Manchester City and I think it would take some sort of implosion or massive crisis for them not to win it. Having won the league last season they will have banished the element of fear (and unfamiliarity) they had last season which saw them crumble occasionally near the end of away games (eg Swansea, Chelsea, Sunderland all had late goals).

Then in my opinion you have a gap to Chelsea, who this summer signed a lot of players. If those players settle then they have on paper a strong squad, with strength in defence, midfield and maybe if either they sign Falcao or Torres rediscovers his form a strong attack. Then maybe they could just about push City for the title race. If the players dont settle or there are doubts about Di Matteo's handling of the squad then they could slip down a little.

Man Utd have strength in some areas (Vidic, Rooney the wingers) but that central midfield is even older this season. I really dont think Scholes has the stamina for a whole season, and the same is probably true of Giggs and Fletcher (given his medical condition). I dont really see a genuine ball winner in there, Phil Jones is a bit like John O'Shea he seems to be more of a defender who might be forced into playing out of position. I still have doubts about the goalkeeper and from the European games (and indeed before his injury around winter time) Lindergart looked a more stable keeper than De Gea. Without Van Persie I would probably expect Man Utd to finish 3rd, but if say Vidic got injured then if Arsenal had a good season they might have the capacity to catch them. I think if Van Persie signs and stays injury free they will have a proven goalscorer and one who can take the pressure off Rooney, so in games like the Blackburn at home game, they will have a quality striker who can win the game for them even if they drop Rooney.

I think selling Van Persie might make business sense for Arsenal, but its created a big weakness in the squad. Maybe Giroud will score goals, but Chamack and Park both had very good scoring records in France and neither have really succeeded at Arsenal - admittedly the latter seems to have been given no chance at all. It also looks like what Ushmanov said about the club lacking ambition is true. Van Persie is just the latest star that Arsenal have sold, if you think about the amount of money Wenger has recouped in transfer fees with the sales of Adebayor, Toure, Henry, Nasri, Clichy, Fabregas etc, there must be getting on for £200 million there. Some of it has been incramentally spent on players like Arshavin, Arteta, Mertesacker, but there hasnt been a stand out signing. Even if some money has gone to repay the stadium, there should still be enough money for Arsenal to make a big signing. Why dont they go in for a player like Falcao, or Leandro Damiao, or Cavani? I have a feeling Kronke is just using the club as a cash cow, it's pretty much what he did with his Denver teams. But the longer Arsenal keep selling stellar players and not replacing them with players of the same quality, the weaker the squad will become. Also, and it's an unfortunate thing to say, but not having these players could start to affect the global fanbase. It seems as though Arsenal are going backwards or at the very best case staying still, instead of competing with Man Utd for 3rd place (the last automatic CL group stage place) they are now being cast adrift into 4th, but other teams like Spurs, Liverpool, even Newcastle, these teams might get stronger and Arsenal could easily find themselves squeezed out of 4th place.
