The letter wasn't even that bad, nothing like the one Rooney made against United.

All he said was he disagreed with Wenger and decided it was best to leave, thanked the fans and the club, didn't make any remarks about the ambition of the club not matching his or what not.

I think the fact Wenger holds zero grudge against, in fact they still clearly get on very well showcases the situation.

remember he didn't celebrate last year, yet continuously received not much respect in return, had you clapped him and not singled him out in a negative way im positive he'd have never celebrated.

Van Persie last season was a patronizing cunt who took pitty on his old club who wasn't doing so well, with us behind United by a great margin. He didn't have the need to celebrate back then.

Now it's a different story. After old Fergie bid farewell taking everybody by surprise, when Robin thought he would still be there for a while, now he's under a new boss (who may be a good manager, but not a winner by any means), the little boy inside RVP may have started shitting his pants that his old club was 8 points ahead of United.

He did win the league last season, I'll give him that, but it turns out Arsenal wasn't a sinking ship, but it's a club on the rise again.

I used to imagine what Arsenal would look like with the Dutch cunt playing alongside Cazorla and Özil and Ramsey in his current form. But that's not important, we can do without him anyway.

I think Wenger should make a point of it and go for big money signing again in Jan. Let's see how history unfolds. Wrong move maybe, eh Robin? I certainly fucking hope so.

At the end of the day some guys are always a cunt, it's just a matter of perspective. Van Persie was a cunt to United fans, now Arsenal fans agree with him being a cunt of the highest order. Few are the players who command respect even from opposition and Robin certainly was never gonna be one of them.
 
If he just said he had decided not to sign a new contract and move on for a new challenge or something and just thanked the fans for their support etc. That would have been a fine letter.

But the fact he sent out the letter in the first place brought his value down straight away.

Also saying this;

It just contradicts itself, he doesn't want to go into any details but then adds information to show that he disagrees with the manager at a time when relations with the manager and the fans were strained to say the least. So out of his huge respect for Wenger he decided to stick the boot in even further?

He thought that by sending the letter the fans would feel pity on him and understand more why he wanted and put the blame on the club, the club that supported him all through the injuries etc.

To play games like this with the fans and club is highly disrespectful and insulting everybody's intelligence.

The letter had two main aims;

1: to force a move and to alert teams to him leaving and making it public
2: to ease the transition by making him feel like he wants the best for the club, but the club are stopping it from happening.

He was successful in the first and unsuccessful in the second because we all aren't stupid :PP

Anyway it doesn't matter and it isn't a big thing, I just don't understand why he can't just do a muted celebration as a show of respect for everybody at Arsenal, it would show some class, which he lacked when he moved away from us.

Yeah there was that too: that statement drove his price way down. At 24m pounds, it was given away, to one of our greatest rivals. In a day and age when Andy Carrols go for 37m. Very hard to stomach indeed.
With that letter, RVP essentially stole a couple of millions from the club who paid his wages when he spent seasons on the treatment table, not to mention the cost to source all that unicorn placenta to heal this ankle :P

If he kept his mouth shut he may have gotten his move anyway, but Arsenal could have some bargaining power at least.

In the end, it was only because Wenger is a zen master, a bloody monk trapped inside a football manager's body. If he wasn't so good at heart and kind to his puppils even when stabbed on the back, you know what he could've done? If I was Wenger I'd put him to train with the reserves for a whole season - no professional football for you my friend, for a whole fucking year. Would pay his wages not to play (like so many times before) and give up a transfer fee (he came to Arsenal for under 1m pounds anyway).

Say what you will, but no top footballer would have coped with that.
 
24m is the highest price in British history for a player out of contract in 12 months (slightly above Lescott). As far as I know. Don't paint it any other way - the narrative was that United overpaid for an aging, injury prone striker who had 1 good season under his belt in 10.

You guys take this fandom thing way too personally. And you act like there was any indication 15 months ago that Arsenal would spend 43m on one of the best players in the world, and probably break their wage structure doing so.

When RVP made his decision, Arsenal hadn't been in a title fight in recent memory. Even 6 months ago Arsenal were celebrating coming 4th like it was the CL trophy. While RVP was polishing his winners medal.

Just because Arsenal have had a great opening 3 months to a season, doesn't vindicate Wenger nor make a mockery of RVP's decision. Firstly, RVP had to make his mind up last August. Secondly, let's hold the ole horses on declaring Arsenal the new all-reigning team in England.

If Arsenal come 2nd to Chelsea or City this season (which I still believe is likely) and RVP comes 4th with United, he'd still have won nothing at Arsenal, and would still have his precious league title.
 
I don't think people are taking this too personally. When players move to rival clubs, like Cashley did, fans hate them for it. But Van Persie did worse with that open statement. Yes, he did drive the price down. It doesn't matter if it was they highest price in history of the Premiership for a player in his last year of contract. You wouldn't be happy if a star striker at your team would run down his contract and release such a letter undermining the manager and board, saying he "doesn't agree with the way the club is going". WTF was that, does he see himself as a club chairman?

Regardless of the price, it was low for the quality of the player based on what he showed recently. Let's see what happens to Lewandowski now in January, I doubt he will go for as low as £24m.

The truth is Ferguson knew exactly what he was paying for, that it was a unique opportunity and that signing was going to be a season changer. It did win him the Premiership in his last season as manager.

We can always speculate what happened, but for me there's no doubt in my mind that Van Persie has been tapped up. There's no other way I could imagine him releasing an open letter to force an exit.
I don't know exactly the Rooney situation, but I bet it doesn't get nearly as nasty as RVP's.

I'm not saying Arsenal is gonna win the league and is above all others in England. But the club is definitely on the rise and that shows how Robin knows fuck all about the direction a club should take.
He should just keep his mouth shut and play his football until his next knee ligament rupture or shattered ankle comes back to haunt him.
 
I'm with the United fans on this.
I think Van Persie genuinely regretted that he had to leave Arsenal and clearly wanted to make a point.

IMO there was nothing wrong with what he did...
 
I don't think you really understand our argument. Let me put it into very simple terms.infact let me just mention one player..

Fabregas.now go work out why no one bats an eye lid when fabregas left us and won loads .

Your narrative may have been that United Overpaid for an aging, injury prone striker who had one good season under his belt.

But I think the real one was he was in his prime, his injuries are more or less behind him and he proved he was one of the most lethal strikers in world football. But see it how you will.

We have signed more than Ozil, if you are indicating we are a one man team? it doesn't really hold out really. We were bringing in many more experienced quality players into our team.

But I am not stressing this too much because I really understand why he would want to move on and I thought it was 50/50 going into the summer transfer window most Arsenal fans resigned themselves to the fact he could leave. Again it was the way he did it.

If you want to convince yourself that the letter was totally harmless and acceptable then there is nothing I can say, I just think it is pretty naive to think that way.

I don't think any fan after the last 8-9 years thinks we are dead certs to win anything this season, but you could see the progression and the change of mindset in money spent and players bought in before Ozil came along.

I don't know why you are getting so pissy either what do you care what we think about Van Persie?

But I am pretty sure most fans would feel the same way if their player left in similar circumstances (Most British fans...I put that in for Gerd ;)) )

Anyway it doesn't really matter, you can enjoy him and we can not like him very much, its what football is all about.

Let's just say you don't quite understand the level of hatred, because there wasn't a United player who's done that. You've got Rooney, who got people disliking him only because he threatened to leave. If he left to Chelsea, do you doubt there would be hatred and that he would get abuse when playing at Old Trafford?

To sum everything up,
Van Persie left:
a) to a rival club in the same league (that's always more difficult for fans to stomach)
b) in his prime;
c) after Wenger stood by him through everything (the rape case and all the injuries)
d) after collecting his pay check during all the time he was injured (and that was a lot).

And in the process of forcing his transfer he:
a) aired dirty laundry in a public statement
b) backstabbed Wenger, the man who trusted him when he was down and out
c) undermined the club by criticising the way it is run
d) drove his price down and weakened the club's hand in the transfer market

I think you have a very different perspective because he is the player who's just joined your club and is doing wonders there. But if you had any player who ticked all the boxes mentioned above, I think you'd understand.

Anyways, I think us Gooners are getting tired of talking about the Dutch Skunk - let's leave it till the Emirates match next year ;)

Football players usually are morons, so they are bound to make stupid remarks (i remember a similar discussion when Nasri left).

Arsenal are top of the league...they have a fantastic team...what is the problem ?

I would give money to swap: Bale telling things about Spurs and Spurs being top of the table...hell we can't even score goals...and next we have to play both Manchester teams...
 
In my opinion, it wasn't the fact that he left, but the way he left. He crippled our position in the transfer market and pissed over the club and manager who always kept believing him and made him the player he is today.
 
I guess it's. International break ... This story grew legs and running about. RVP left ,won a trophy n thought he was going to be working w/ SAF for the rest of his career. The truth is Fergie had to apologies n say hey , Moyes has the same accent . ;)

Do you mean timing wise? I agree with that, if you're going to leave, leave early so the team can rebuild.

But price wise, I still think you're killing it. $24m for a player with 1 full season under his belt, at 29 with one year left on his contract? (so free in jan?)

That's brilliant business from Arsenal.
 
The price is argueable, but I meant his statement. I don't think many 'top' players were interested in joining us after he left the way he did.

We are talking about a person that used to play for us and the feelings we have for him based on things that have happened in the past. It's an Arsenal thread and we talk about all things Arsenal related past and present.

Saying 'Deal with it' isn't a very insightful post :DD

You can say 'Deal with it' in any situation. If people are complaining about somebody diving in the box and discussing whether it was a dive or not, you could just say 'people dive, Deal with it'

We could be talking about the death of a player and our memories about them and you could come in and say 'everybody dies Deal with it'

You can say 'Deal with it' as much as you want on any subject you want, but it is in fact such a stupid statement to say in most situations because it totally dismisses all of the reasoning behind the discussion in the first place.

But if you want to post crappy posts and spell check me go ahead, I will hold you close to my heart and think of you as a valued member of this forum.

Btw, probably the classiest thing going in football is wishing injury to a player you used to support.
