Arsene Wenger's naïveté never ceases to surprise me. A thousand matches at the helm and the man CAN'T learn?!
ADAPT your game plan and formation to opposition, FFS!
No wonder we get raped playing stronger opposition. We go out to play Chelsea as if we were facing Crystal Palace!
Everyone knows Mourinho's teams are counter attacking ones and he would be looking to aggressively press high up the pitch. That was a given to anyone... except Wenger apparently! He played his old tired game plan, that everyone knows inside out. So predictable.
Not only that, Wenger's game plan turns our fullbacks into wingers most of the time. What happens next is, Chelsea's overtly physical midfield nicks the ball away from Cazorla or Ox and they have a 4 vs 3 counter attacking situation.
Their first 2 goals happened like this, carbon copy to each other. Gibbs was high up the pitch.
But after he got sent off (appalling mistake by the ref BTW) Vermaelen was the left back being caught off guard exactly the same way. We were 0-3 down reduced to 10 men and I don't know what the fuck Wenger wants by sending his fullbacks on a suicidal mission.
So is it Gibbs' and Vermaelen's fault to be caught off guard like that? No, this goes into Wenger's tally.
Going into the 2nd half at 0-4 down, we had more of the same. Defend to try and save some face and dignity? No, let's throw ourselves forward! Our defensive line was very high for their 6th goal by that Egyptian dude, and I don't know what Wenger was trying to achieve there. A negative record for his 1000th match?
In the same way we were exposed to Liverpool's counter attacks and through balls against a high defensive line, today we were exposed to Chelsea's counter by suicidal fullbacks overlapping and careless attacking.
What pains me the most is that if we had played for a draw today, it wouldn't hurt our title chances - by being only 4 points behind Chelsea with a game in hand.
But if I'm brutally honest - a team that can't cope with away matches against top opposition, doesn't deserve to be in a fight for the title.
1000 games for Wenger and he will have a two year contract, which prompts mixed feelings in me. I wanted him to stay with the club and do well.
But I don't see how he can do well, not well enough to win big things again. He simply shows no signs of improvement when playing the top teams.
I've given up hope he will change his approach and turn his team into a bit more cynical, results driven team. The man is a purist and, at 67 years old, it is unreasonable to expect he will learn a thing or two more.
