English Premier League thread

Well Capello would've played the same team probably so I doubt we would've won.

Parker and Barry should be nowhere near an England team, let alone one of them being captain.
 
Parker was EPL player of the Year last year and among the best again this year. Won 2 awards well deservedly too. Barry's gone downhill.

Harsh knee jerk reaction in my opinion.
 
parker being player of the year was a bollox choice, west ham last season got battered frequently and finished bottom of the league. i dunno why he got it, its like some random media twat decided he was good all of a sudden for some reason. then everyone else started following this opinion. he's just a park ji-sung, dirk kuyt type of player who has no fucking talent but puts in alot of effort and just runs about tackling people and aint scared of gettin hurt

also, forget pearce and redknapp and bring in ian holloway!!
 
Parker is a fantastic player. If you don't see that, then you should buy glasses.
On top of that he's an ideal captain for your national team. We all know he is no Messi, but neither is Mascherano and he is Argentina's captain.

I watched the first half, Gerrard once again was terrible.
What did he do to deserve a selection? I've virtually seen all the Liverpool matches since he's back from injury. He was always among the wordt players.

And so what if West Ham was getting beat all the time last year? That means you can't have player of the year from that team ? If anything, it showcased just how often they relied on him for EVERYTHING and he carried them. Be it defending and running around or creating goals and scoring them. He did it all. Does it all and does it on a VERY consistent basis! It's one thing looking good and being productive in a super team, it's another doing it when your team-mates aren't exactly world beaters.

Anyway, we seem to completely disagree with each other on this topic so I'm gonna leave it at this. I respect your opinion but can't agree.
 
buy glasses? are you 12? no one is saying he should be messi, he's an alrite player but no where near good enough to be captain or even be in the team tbh.. there's just a parker bandwagon going on right now in the media but that will end after our inevitable fail at euro 2012
the only reason parker was selected captain was because pearce wanted to do something different.

your right about gerrard though, he was shite. it was like he forgot he wasn't playing for stoke and didn't realise he was playing for the national team with welbeck up front and not carroll, every pass gerrard made went over welbeck head.. i dunno if there was an injury affecting him though. it might of

First of all "buy glasses" was meant to be a mildly funny way in saying that you don't see the obvious. There is no need to react that agressive.

Look how Liverpool fans by times talk more about Man Utd than Liverpool
Look how Everton fans often talk more about Liverpool than Everton.
Look how Spurs fans often are more obsessed by Arsenal than by their own team.
On this forum there is a very kind Swansea fan, but when he talks about Cardiff, it's like those posts are written by another person.

On top of that you only pick the negative arguments i gave in the Barcelona thread. I also said that it's good thing that English fans are passionate.

It's very obvious that i'm not wrong at all. As a foreigner i can see things more objective (because i watch from a distance and detached). Besides that, i can understand that those things don't disturb you...because it 's in your DNA...because your football culture is that way. And by saying that, i don't want to attach any value on the way British fans live football...

I'm not 12. I'm 50 but age should play no role in this discussion.
Concerning Parker: he is the ideal captain because he is the leader on the pitch. He is the first to fill gaps, to chase the ball and to support his team mates. Is he England's best player? No he isn't. But when France won the World Cup, who was captain? Zidane? No, Deschamps.
Is Messi captain of Argentina? No Massherano is.

Is it a coïncidence that both Masscherano and Deschamps are players similar to Parker? I don't think so, but of course contrary to what you think, i never claimed to possess all the wisdom in the world, far from that. But knowing that is in a way some sort of wisdom.

This can happen anywhere though. If you looked at Zambrotta when he played for Milan against Juventus a few years ago, the Juventus fans booed him. Years ago when I saw an Inter v Lazio match the Lazio fans booed Stankovic and this was a few years after he left Lazio for Inter. At Lazio v Reggina in 2005 the Lazio fans handed out stickers with "Mancini uomo di m****" on them. Even in Germany, where the fans are well behaved and amongst the most knowledgeable and cordial in the world, Schalke fans unfurled a scarcastic (and rather cheeky) banner against Neuer when they played Bayern. A few years ago I was at a Ukraine v Belarus game, Milyevski (of Dinamo) was playing Belarus fans unfurled a big banner drawing him as a harlot. This was because Milyevski was born in Belarus and played for them at youth before "defecting" to Ukraine as it was a bigger team. Back when I used to watch the Spanish league regularly I remember Figo being hit by a piece of pig near the corner flag, as he had left Barca for Real.

Also sometimes fan can still appreciate ex-players after they have left. I was at Arsenal v Shakhtar in the away end a year or so ago and the Arsenal fans actually clapped Eduardo when he scored against them. Bellamy got a lot of applause from Man City fans and even some Cardiff fans in his recent games for Liverpool against those two. Lazio fans still cheer for De Silvestri after he left for Fiorentina, though that is mainly down to them seeing him as "one of their own" (i.e. a Lazio fan) and both Podolski and Zidan were still revered by some fans at Koln and Mainz even during their spells at "bigger" clubs (Bayern and Dortmund).
 
Both make valid points gerd right abt the fans here and I want to point out. wHU fans love Tevez more than City he didnt celebrated after scoring when mutd faced them. .
 
Parker is the best DMF in the premier league this season - and was last season too. He's been more consistent than Song, Barry and De Jong - the only person that could maybe be in with a shout is Lucas and he's knee knacked. If you can't see how important his breaking up of play, runs forward and effusive nature is, well, dunno you don't get it then.

I do think he gets away with a lot of late tackles because of his 'honest' tag though. He often drills people right after they shoot and won't even get called up on it. Guess cause he was being brave.

But in reality, he only has to make those tackles/blocks so much because he's positionally very weak, much like Darren Fletcher when he got so overhyped a few years back.

At one point in the first half against Holland, Sneijder suddenly found himself in absolutely acres of space because both Barry and Parker were out of position and nowhere near the man or the ball. Parker then duly charged the ball down, the crowd went wild and Tyldsley on commentary said 'and there's brave Scotty Parker, leading by example'.

It just reminded me of how everyone used to rave about 'Lionheart John Terry' throwing his all in front of the ball. Completely disregarding the fact that in Terry's case, he was completely protected by Carvahlo and Makelele, two absolutely outstanding players in their positions. Terry has been found out since both of those players left Chelsea.

Parker offers absolutely nothing on the ball, seemingly much the same as Barry and both get in the team in front of Carrick who has one of the highest pass percentages and also I think the highest interception rate in the Prem this year. He and Scholesy must absolutely despair when they see a Parker/Barry combo starting for their country, I know I do.

Disclaimer - I may be slightly biased towards Carrick due to my allegiances to United, but he's in magnificent form this season and is a much, much better player than those two.
 
Parker is a good player but he isn't that good, he's not the best DM at Spurs.

He gets a lot of excess love because there are many West Ham supporters in the press.
 
I agree concerning Carrick, he's maybe the most underrated player. I think that is due to his transfer to United where he became a utility player. He sort of disappeared from the radar.

Obviously i don't agree on Parker. IMO he is a great player. He is England's equivalent to Van Bommel and De Jong and much better than those two. The problem is that England played both Parker and Barry. There is only place for one of both these players (and it is clear to me that Parker should always play).

And beachryan, i think his red card against Arsenal will no his last sending off. I fear from him during the Euro's.
 
I don't agree at all that Parker offers nothing on the ball or that he's weak positionally. For me, he's a very good all-round player who can do a bit of everything but SPECIALIZES in Stamina/Work-rate and commitment. But the boy can shoot, he can score, he can set up goals and has good vision and passing.

Let's not forget that Scott Parker started out as an even fairly attack minded Central midfielder at Charlton where he regularly made great runs in the box and had more than enough technique/vision/passing and to this day does. It's just these days, they've converted him into a more defensive role and so he's seen as one of the best DMF's but he's certainly not a NATURAL DMF and not a guy who's useless on the ball given his natural instincts and former positions/tendencies.

And he's been great and become a KEY player wherever he's played with the exception of that rare stint at Chelsea where he barely got a chance anyway and had to compete with the likes of Essien, Lampard and Makelele who at that time were each irreplaceable and 3 of the world's very finest.

He started out VERY brightly at Charlton and played the biggest role in them staying up and doing well under Curbishley and also became the best player and captain of Newcastle and West Ham after. So while the MEDIA and the 'General' fans may have only started giving him the credit he deserves and 'hyping' him up in the past 18 months, this is a guy who's been performing at a very high level and very consistently for YEARS! He's only recently gotten the press he deserved.

The main problem is what Gerd said. You can't play BOTH Barry and Parker. There should be place for only one of them and that place should be for Parker.

As for Carrick, he does have better vision/passing range than Parker though it's VERY harsh to say Scotty offers nothing or even little on the ball (in fact go compare goals scored and assists between these two or for all those who think Parker is no attacking force) and we'll see something interesting but Scotty beats him in EVERY other category and so for me, it's a no brainer why he's in the team and Michael is not.

I second to that. He is simply not good enough to play on the big stage.
Parker is one of the most overrated players in the league. He's a good passer of the ball (although nothing extraordinary) and throws himself all over the place. He is an alright player who puts in a shift. I can't see nothing more than that, and I cannot believe all the hype over him.
But then again, he is a darling of the media, hence this "campaign" for his place in the English 1st team and his captaincy.
This will lead to Euro failure for sure.
I think he should be in the squad, but not in the first team and certainly not as captain.

The fact that his biggest contributions are body blocks and diving tackles - and the fact that this is enough to please English fans - speaks volumes about the state of this current English team.

And while we are on the subject of tackling, he's not a great tackler either. More often than not he thrusts himself carelessly with mistimed tackles resulting in fouls, bookings and injuries to opponents. Just take a look at both his bookings against Arsenal last weekend. As a result Vermaelen carries an ankle injury and he got himself sent off, missing out another big match.

With him playing so consistently, Charlton may have survived in the Premiership, but Newcastle and West Ham got relegated. It's just a matter of how you want to look at it.
 
It's symptomatic of this country's obsession with average kick and run central midfielders and underutilisation of midfielders capable of actually passing a football competently. i.e. Scholes shunted out to the left wing to accommodate the infamous Gerrard-Lampard pairing, Carrick not being given a look in during the most impressive years of his club career
 
We needed those three points today, and apparently two cracking goals from Gylfi Sigurðsson (we need to sign him up, he's currently on loan). I didn't go to the game but a mate travelled up to Wigan and he texted me saying not to miss MOTD tonight! Shame about Dyer getting sent off, though I heard it was a harsh decision by the ref. I doubt the FAW will chalk it off either, because their panel is full of Cardiff supporters! :RANT:

11 points clear of safety, but we got Man City next week :SHOCK:
 
Scholes is one of the best and most underrated players of the last 20 years, there is no debate possible about that.

But.

1 he plays a different role than Parker. Parker could well play together with Scholes;
2 didn't Scholes himself stopped playing for the national team, he ruled himself out...or did he changed his opinion on that...i would be amazed.
 
Watching MOTD right now, great goals from Sigurðsson indeed! However I have to say Dyer's red card was definitely HARSH. Yes he left his foot up but never a sending off.

BTW Scholes announced his retirement from international football after Euro 2004, but I wouldn't have been surprised if Fergie had had a say in that.
 
Just wached Fulham trashing Wolves 5-0. What a big mistake to sack McCarthy at this stage for Wolves... that poor assistant guy had a baptism of fire today.

Fulham played great today, the opposition was very poor but still...

Dembele was very good today, so was Andrew Johnson. But the best players were Dempsey and Pogrebnyak. The American grabbed 2 and the big Russian got a perfect hattrick. What a start for him! 5 goals in 3 matches.

Great signing for Fulham!
 
Dempsey is having the season of his life for Club n Country ! not bad for a caravan/trailer park kid :BOP:
 
I don't know what it is with Fulham, but with players like Dempsey, Dembele, Ruiz, Murphy, their Norwegian CB and others they got very good players. They should be higher in the table.
 
They got great scouting there. I don't know who's behind these signings but they constantly recruit some of the best foreign players and bring them to the EPL. Players who could well be moving to bigger clubs.
 
Dembele is a stunningly gifted footballer.

Has the rare ability to seem to have so much time on the ball in high tempo modern football.

He's completely two footed, great pace and strength. Wonderfully quick feet coupled with close control and keeps his head up when running not stuck on the ball like other dribblers tend to do which causes them to run blindly in to dead ends on the pitch.

I sound like his biggest fan here!!! :WORSHIP::WORSHIP: I guess I am a big admirer of his. I have been watching him for a good while now and he's been playing this way for years. It's only now he's getting recognition.
 
I would like to see Clint get a 'big' move. I'm glad so many others are seeing what he is capable of now. He's one of the few players for the US that doesn't seem afraid of any situation, he fires off shots from any opening and I love it.

+1 He is also a team player. He covered the most ground of any player at the 2009 Confederations Cup and the third most ground of any player at the 2010 World Cup. He would be an invaluable asset to any of top clubs in the EPL.
 
I remember people in the Liverpool thread being sarcastic about both Fulham and Dempsey.
They called Fulham a long ball team (which they never were).
Liverpool could certainly use players like Dempsey, Ruiz and Dembele.

Jol's masterstroke was to put Dembele in midfield. Hugher bought him as a forward, but Dembele's weak point is that he doesn't score very often. Since he's a midfielder, Dembele really had become Fulham's pivotal player...
