Yeah, but look at the team he 'started' with. No other manager has walked into such a good situation. Wenger, Ferguson and Benitez all had to build teams. Ranieri/Abramovich had already bought the best squad in the league when Jose showed up.

Not saying he's not a great manger - he is - but he's never had to build a team imo. Every where he's been he's had either the best or second best squad in the league. Perhaps his best talent is picking a contract!
 
I was pleased to see the Hawk-Eye was finally put into practice on Saturday. I was not pleased, however, to have confirmed a Man City goal.
 
that's a good, valid point ryan. but you can't blame him for that. he's actually very good at turning a set of randomly gathered star players into a real team with a couple of smart changes. he knows every team needs a khedira or a motta. I'm not saying this as if he's the only one aware of this but there are so many dumb managers who always overlook this aspect of the game. it's much more critical than saying hey I want ronaldo to forward, buy me thiago silva for defence, let's get neuer for the goal. any manager can do that under a rich ownership. and I'm sure Mourinho can build a team from zero but being a very friendly figure to his teams, he doesn't seem to enjoy kicking players out just for the sake of making it a zero.

p.s. remember the shevchenko issue between him and abramovich as well. it's not that easy to work for the bosses like perez, roman, moratti. these guys never fully trust in the coaches. just a little conflict (be it transfers or the results) and bam you're sacked! whereas in clubs like ajax, bayern and barcelona the tradition of applying long term projects and certain football philosophy has always had the support of the board (time to see if united is another one).

Totally agree - he's an excellent manager and coach - sets teams up well and gets the most out of sometimes 'unwanted' players.

But I'd love to see him build his own team. Start at a mid-size club and build it up. That's the true test if he wants to be a 'complete' manager and show he's done it all. I'm sure he'll be fine with another CL though ;)

How I wish United had looked past his less favorable traits and signed him up. He was DYING for the United job.

umm, what do you think about porto (04 cl winner)? they are the only team outside of 4 major leagues which won the CL since ajax did in 1995. and you can say mourinho didn't have a super squad at the start of his porto career like one of those he had with chelsea, madrid and inter, although it already had some of his key players like deco, costinha and carvalho. then again, one can say "how many of us heard the names of these guys back then?" too.

tbh, I think he already got that achievement you're asking, even if he was a relatively unknown figure back then.
 
Though it wasn't with 'minnows' his treble with Inter was the moment I realized he was a great manager.

I'm full on confident about the league fixture, not too excited about this cup match, the recuperation of a loss could be devastating on the long run.
 
Well, looking at the bright side, you're the only ones (at least in England) capable of beating them away, the rest of the English teams are not that strong (Barça might be the one too).
 
We have strength in depth in attack but elsewhere it's a bit of a myth that we have the best squad. Arse have more depth in midfield and Chelsea have more defensive depth.
 
Shouldn't rotating Navas and Negredo be the other way around?

I suppose City could line-up like this:
Pantilimon; Richards, Kompany, Demichelis, Kolarov; Rodwell, Touré; Navas, Silva, Negredo and Dzeko

Still a strong line-up and would have Hart, Zabaleta, Nastasic, Fernandinho and Agüero rested.
 
Well, he hits him. It's not correct of Chico to jump on him that way (that moment, when Carroll stands and Chico stays in his position in mid-air), but it's not the right decision to punch him. Correct referee decision to me.
 
Yeah I agree.

Chico obviously made the most of it to get him the red card but Carroll knew what he was doing when he 'accidentally' ;) hit him with his right arm while turning around.
 
That's the rules of football for you. You can snidely rake your studs down a players Achilles, kick someone after they've shot, wrestle them by the neck to the ground and leave a foot in as they slide into you, but if you so much as flick their cheek it's a red card.

I do hope poor Flores was okay. I mean the sheer force of that blow, I hope he'll manage to come back some time this season.
 
Well deserved red card for a very stupid player...and yes Chico made the most of it, but this was a relegation battle and Caroll let his team seriously down.
