Manchester United Thread

Great first half performance, some nice football, lots of possession and then a dreadful second half performance, could have quite easily drawn that. Was like watching 2 different sides in the end.

Hopefully we'll be more convincing when we get a solid defence behind us. Still think our disjointed pre-season is having an effect actually.

Rooney out for 4 weeks probably after receiving that nasty cut, who ever will replace him?

Am I the only one that doesn't get the commentary/lack of word on Fulham's opener? Diarra just took Young out. Classic pick and roll in basketball, but you're not allowed to do that in footie. All my commentators say is 'right from the training ground'. Well thanks for the insight. So now you can just tackle an opposition player off the ball, to free up an attacker? Great. Let's do it.

Amazing 40 minutes of play, then we were pants. I love Rafael and he may have been our most dangerous attacker (!) but almost every chance came down his side, as did the foul leading up to the 1st goal and the cross for the second. He seems more likely to pop up on the opposition penalty spot than be marking the left attacker in his own area.

Still, what a finish from RvP, and what a show from Kagawa and Cleverley.
 
Just got back.

If Kagawa doesn't play every minute this season then we're screwed. He was fantastic today and then as soon as he went off, all of our fluency and movement disappeared and it was back to last seasons monotony.

Haven't learnt our lessons about complacency. Should've pushed on at 3-1 and battered them but we didn't and we let them score a stupid goal.

Had forgotten how much I love Old Trafford though, can't be having another three year gap in between visits.
 
He was terrible defensively but great going forward. At least he makes watching Utd play that bit more entertaining because of his unpredictability.

hopefully we can prod along as I think we'll get much better when fitness and bedding in for players gets better, RVP's goal was brilliant but he needs minutes under his belt.

Carrick can hopefully move into midfield with a CB coming in, instantly making us much better defensively. Where was Nani :ANX: the entire 2012 "Summer of the Muppet" will sour if we sell him.

He wasn't that good. Danced past Anderson/Cleverley a couple times, but didn't really create anything til about the 95th minute. Their threat came down the sides.

I know I'm biased, but I'm so sick of how pundits have written off David De Gea. He shows great feet to beat an attacker? Lucky. He makes a diving, one handed save? 'That's one the keeper should have'. He gets elbowed in the face by Fellaini? 'The keeper needs to just take him out'. He gets very clearly fouled in the 2nd goal (the striker doesn't even attempt to play the blal, just runs into De Gea) and he's weak. Let's watch it 3 times.

I'd like to know why that foul wasn't given.. Clearly Petric only had eyes for him.
Mind you, Vidic shouldn't have been challenging when De Gea had given him a shout.

I think De Gea has the ability to, and I believe he will, become the best keeper in the world he's a baby in keeper terms he'll come good in terms of dealing with long balls an catching.
Some of his saves are world class, some of them I'm not convinced even Casillas could have made.. His diving length is incredible, reflexes are among the sharpest in the world and his punching/catching whilst not under pressure is some of the best in the premier league. Also his footwork and kicking accuracy is brilliant, especially the way he took on and beat that striker.
 
I love watching Rafael, the most exciting right back in the world right now and with maturity he will blossom into excellent defender...

cant say you will miss rooney as he has been terrible of late...stick with Kagawa and Van Persie in front of him.
 
And we have got Chicharito. Seriously, that guy in other team would blossom to be goal poacher. Sure his 2nd season was off (injured and Welbeck in form for most part), but I wouldn't like to see Chicha go to any EPL club.

Hopefully he gets started some more...

I still believe he is best as a 30 minute sub. His energy and movement in that short space of time is infectious, and no defender can stop him creating chances for himself.

When he plays the full 90 it exposes the flaws in his game, and he also stops making runs as he tires (understandably).

Start matches with Rooney/RvP, use Welbeck depending on the opposition and then always have Chicarito ready in the Solskjaer role. Done and done.

Oh and anyone wanting rid of Rooney is batsh(t crazy. He's going nowhere, and he's still our main man.
 
I don't get all this Rooney hate. He's an exceptional player and still Utd's best player.

I wouldn't like to see him in a City shirt (same with C. Ronaldo) but if I had a choice of having Rooney or RVP in my team I'd pick Rooney without doutbt. Not a difficult choice either
 
The hate comes because he isn't a Super Human and playing like a God every game.
He was poor in the Everton game, so I think the rest vs Fulham would have been good for him, if he didn't get caught by Rodallega.

And anyone saying Kagawa can replace and do the job better, in terms of link up play he can, but I don't think Kagawa has the same amount of goals in him as Rooney would.

Having Chicharito to use his pace in the last 20-30 minutes of a game would be a great tactical play for us, while starting with RvP with Rooney behind him and one of Kagawa, Welbeck or Nani on the left and have them interchanging between the three with Valencia/Nani/Young down the right.
Though I can see Young becoming a forgotten man once Nani sorts his head out and finds his form.

We have Jones and Evans returning for the next game, Evan will start and Jones will be on the bench I imagine, so Carrick will move back into that 2 man midfield base alongside Cleverley and Scholes dropping back onto being the player to come on and close games lout.. Though preferably we'd just keep pushing forward looking for more goals than close it down.

He was that good though, his job wasn't to create it was to orchestrate and he did that phenomenally well IMO, would win the ball back, do something flashy and start off an attack countless of times.

would easily challenge Carrick for that spot in the team and create competition and add that final piece to the puzzle IMO.

Cleverley impresses me I like him and think he will become important cog in Utd midfield.

Somebody clearly trusts media coverage over actually watching the player, Anderson is a potentially amazing player just injuries have hindered his career thus far and so he hasn't had the chance to break into the side and hold down a place, whenever he does something else happens and he has to spend another period out and then he's back and needing to fight for his place.

Given enough consistent game time he could easily become one of our best CM's, we just have to keep the faith. Cashing in now would be a mistake, because at anothe club he'd get game time and then we will see tr potential we missed out on, you're forgetting the man is only 24, and started his United career as a CAM, not a CDM where Fergie is changing his playing style to.
 
No...I have watched enough of Anderson to form that opinion than you Taylor.

He is a good player but not Man Utd quality. When you consider you have had Keane and Scholes playing in there positions Anderson just doesn't cut it.

I would rather have Liverpool, Man City, Arsenal and Chelsea options in there than Anderson.

Man Utd fans I know want him out too, they say that they have given up on him...patience is running out now.

Maybe he will have great season but I doubt it.

No offence intended just my opinion :)
 
I've given up trying to understand Fergie's blindspot to the midfield. It's been so many years now that it's almost like a comedic part of each transfer window.

We'll never truly play to our potential without a commanding, physical player available for certain matches. We have lots of midfield options, but they're all relatively 'soft' and not super athletic.

I'm not saying you need a Tiote etc for every match - not at all - but there will be times (I'm dreading the West Ham matches this season) when we really need some steel. And Carrick, Cleverley, Scholes, Anderson and Kagawa are not going to give us that.

All that said, £15m on Dembele seems a bit risky for a player that only has 1 season as a midfielder under his belt, regardless of how he played this weekend. Song is definitely a superior player, and just went for less.

There are options out there, but Fergie seems determined to ignore them.

Actually, a Giggs comparison wouldn't be that bad, in terms of both being former wingers who were converted to central roles, both left footed, both excellent dribblers.

Obviously, Dembélé's far more powerful physically but his situation is similar to when Giggs first played there alongside a purely defensive player (O'Shea), while Dembélé has Diarra doing the majority of the defensive work alongside him.
 
I'd say that a hybrid of Giggs and Carrick makes sense, doesn't matter now since he's off to Spurs. We'll just have to spend 30M on him in 2 years.
 
Apparently Zenith want to throw 35mln E for Nani... I would grab it and get more consistent winger. Maybe Gaitan? Or some Udinese guy? (Alexis Sanchez for Barcelona does brilliantly after all :P) And they have some talented guys there.

Dunno. Nani and Young although good players on their days are way too inconsistent in United :(. Sad, but true.
