Manchester United Thread

IMO Wayne Rooneyhas every right to ask for a better contract.
Every professional player in the world has that right, that is the way things work.
The same can be said for most of us.

I'm very satisfied with my wages (to be honest, i don't know what i earn, i know it's enough), but sometimes you compare your own (subjective) merits with the (subjective) merits of colleagues and sunddenly you think that you should earn more.

That is not the only reason Rooney has every right to ask for a better contract. For some reason, i never really liked Rooney...he has something that puts me off...he seems a player who isn't having any fun on the pitch...

BUT

He is one hell of a player...he is still one of the only true English World Class English players. On top of that Rooney is very versatile and is a true team player. The fact that he is that versatile has masked how good he is, because he often had to play on positions that were not his best...he could have shone (is that correct, it's from to shine) more if he had Always played in his best position...imagine Vidic playing as a full back, Ronaldo as a DMF, Carrick as CF...On top of that Rooney never complained...

My last argument: Rooney is Man Utd's most iconic player...he should Always have the highest wages...until there is another iconic player...there isn't at the moment (i haven't forgotten RVP, but one season is not enough).

Rooney doesn't dserve the criticism he gets from some in this thread...
 
He's a class player but does he really deserve to be the PL's highest earner, which he already is? I don't think so. And I am sure he does not deserve to be the best paid player to the tune of what is being rumored now. He's in the top handful but he's not the top player.

Wouldn't surprise me if Mata comes in and completely overshadows him, as RVP did.

I've always said Rooney is underrated by most English fans. He's literally the most consistent player in the premier league over almost the past decade (only Lampard is close, but he's obviously near the end of his great career). Rooney also brings a lot more to a team than just goals and assists, his energy, enthusiasm and desire are infectious.

If you say raising his salary by 80k a week for maybe 3 seasons, that's actually only an increase of 13m pounds over that time. You're obviously not going to replace him for that, so it makes a ton of sense imo.

He may not be the very best player in the league, but he and Suarez are probably the two best playing at clubs that can't lose money each year, so he probably does 'deserve' to get in the top few wage packets. Plus he's marketable and 'iconoic'.

I certainly hope we wrap him up.

As I've said, as poor as we've been this year, imagine that in a week's time we could bring in Vidic, Fellaini, RVP, Rooney and Mata. That is almost literally a new team.
 
Santi Cazorla(fee:£16m) is on 70k and RVP was on 70k before joining MUTd. I wonder how much a squad player make. Arsenal`s squad players make a lot though 40k-50k hence Bendtner`s wages at 55k :CONFUSE: everyone was in shock (other clubs) So we call him Lord Bendtner to justify his overpaid wages.

I'm not sure I understand all these numbers, but the latest total wage figures I can find has United at 162m, and Arsenal at 143m. So something doesn't add up - those figures aren't that far apart. It's all a bit of a mystery to me.

19m is a difference :LOL: thoses aren`t regular payroll sums. I know we pay more for for reserve players then most in the UK. When , Theo holds out on contract for wanting 100k or Sagna stalling for a 100k now. It sends a message to the payroll hike demand.

Who knows the hidden fees
The only time I ever saw in details on where the money goes is this Barca transaction to Neymar made public:

Neymar salary

Five-year contract

€44m in wages, 8.8m per year

€2.7m as agent commission

€10m signing-on fee

Total: €56.7m
Neymar fee

€17m to Santos

€40m “compensation paid” to the N&N company (owned by Neymar da Silva and Nadine, his parents)

plus a bonus of €2m to Santos if he makes the Ballon D’Or top three.

Total: €59.1m (including Ballon D’Or bonus)

Did RVP overshadow Rooney ?
Football is about more than one season.
If you look at the long term, there are 3 absolute world class EPL players: Giggs (and he should have stopped two years ago), Rooney and Lampard. IMO Gerrard and Ashley Cole are very close.

If you look at the short term, Rooney is one of perhaps 20 players who could claim to be the best paid player of the EPL. And yes i also see 4 possible City players.

Am i biased ? Yes, like i already said, for some reason which is beyond me, i don't like Rooney...so yes, i'm biased.

I don't think anyone would argue any differently. Rooney was poor for much of the season. RVP was fit and on fire.

But I wasn't basing my opinion on his contract/s purely on that or on one season.

There's no way to prove it but I'd bet that Utd would have more points now if it was RVP that had been fit this season and Rooney not.
 
But RVP played only one season for Man UTD. So you can't possibly say that he overshadowed Rooney for more than one season...this season they were both injured.
RVP was injured from december, he scored his last goal against Arsenal in november...

Perhaps i misunderstood your last post (would not be the first time).
 
Rooney was the main striker before RVP came. Rooney scored like 27 goals before RVP`s arrival .RVP was vital to Mutd 20th title, overshadowing is RVP`s role in retaining the title where Rooney was benched even for the CL clash vs RM.

I think last season RVP was on fire when Rooney was on the pitch. I rate Rooney the most important player, by far, in Manchester United current squad.

The problem is a more generic problem. To battle for titles you must have a top-10 player in at least the majority of the positions in the field. Take the squads of the big guns of Europe and the top 3 in the Premier League. They all feature a lot more top-10 players than Mancheste United, what means that man-to-man, the squad of Manchester United has turned weak in the last years. 4 years ago, when we faced you in the Wembley final, most of United players playing that final were top-10 players at the moment.

After 4 years, the squad level has degraded. Time to spend more money to fight again at the top.

Yes, he only joined them last season. He overshadowed him the year before as well when he was at Arsenal but I was simply talking about his arrival at Utd as an example of what Mata could end up doing.

Rooney has played more football this season than RVP, I think if that was reversed Utd would have more points.
 
Imagine rewinding 12 months and being told United were buying Fellaini, Mata and Januzaj would break into the first team with good performances. You would have thought back then it would be amazing!

What Have We Learned?
A lot of things I personally did not expect when I started digging in to the data.
I did not realize that Rooney lead the league in normalized scoring contribution last season.
Rooney is actually experiencing his best season in recent times across a large number of metrics this year.
Looking at the data, it’s fairly clear that Rooney’s best role is as a second striker or playmaker. His key pass numbers aren’t up there with Ozil or Silva, but they are high, and Rooney’s goalscoring still eclipses either of the playmaking maestros by some distance.
Rooney has only been the best scorer in one of the last 4.5 seasons, but he’s been close every single time. That sort of consistency in what is one of the toughest leagues in the world to score in, is damned impressive.
Does Rooney Deserve £300K/week?
There’s a loaded question. Does anyone, let alone any athlete, deserve £15M a year? That’s too philosophical to answer either way.
However, make no bones about it, Wayne Rooney is probably the best overall scorer the Premier League has seen in the last half decade (for what it’s worth, I actually think Fabregas had a chance at this if he’d stayed at Arsenal, but alas…). Additionally, while I would normally be worried about falling production in a 28-year-old forward, Rooney has two very important things working for him.
1) His best role is as a more cerebral playmaker (I know, I know… the jokes write themselves), which means a marginal loss in pace or physical ability will not affect him as much as it would a speed striker.
2) Even though people might not know it, at 28, he is currently experiencing his best season in recent times. Is it sustainable? Nobody really knows. However, even if this is the peak, a new 3- or 4-year deal at this point probably won’t smart too much in the last season of the deal unless Rooney has serious injury problems, something to this point he has completely avoided.

It actually did. Rooney was given a defensive task on the right wing in the first leg, which he was so incapable of carrying out (and led to Coentrao having too much space to whip in a cross that Ronaldo scored from) that he was replaced in the starting lineup by a 40 year old, who played out of position on the right wing and did a much better job defensively.

van Persie was excellent throughout the season, with or without Rooney in the same side. In fact, the two of them only sporadically showed signs of an understanding or partnership between themselves throughout the entire season.
 
Hmm so Mata directly behind RvP with Rooney, Januzaj and Kagawa on the bench. Strange duck that Moyesy. Didn't expect RvP to start after so long but I'll take it.
 
I suspect Van Persie was possibly fit a week or so ago but Moyes was extra cautious this time.

Rooney probably less so it made sense to start on the bench and allowed Mata to come into the side behind RVP.

Back and he scores OOOH ROBIN VAN PERSIE! :D decent debut for Mata, things were definitely much better tonight and hopefully they will steadily improve with Rooney starting the next one.
 
I still think that with the presence of Mata, Rooney, Kagawa and Januzaj we need to do away with the classic winger strategy.

The 3 behind the striker need to play narrower in my opinion, and then we can expect some really really good stuff from the front 4.
 
Moyes is still way too conservative. Imagine a side with RvP, Rooney, Mata, Januzaj/Kagawa as the front 4 with Cleverly and Carrick behind (or a better DMF). That way the team have a nice passer in the middle and the front 4 can constantly change positions to mess with the other team's defensive tactics. Very nice free flowing football to be played.

But regardless, it is always nice to get a win. Just felt we could've won better. Still very shaky in the middle of the park (well, Giggs and Jones is part of the reason) and even though Young scored a cracker, I still think most of his play last night was horrible. Poor Passes, not tracking back to defense....
 
It's interesting - Ole set his team out to play quite similar to Swansea and Sunderland in their recent successes at OT. And that largely involves 'taking the sting' out of the game to the highest degree I've ever seen.

I'll try to dig out a heat map, but basically Cardiff passed between the back 4 and Medel for at least 2 minutes before even trying to venture over their own half way line. All match, even when down 2-0. Swansea did that too, and then scored from one of their two attempts. And then Sunderland of course scored from their one and only shot on target in 120 minutes.

It's a very interesting tactic, not one I've seen before. Basically teams set up to bore United and the fans into making a defensive mistake. And it seems to be working.

There was a point in the first half when Cardiff had had 65% of posesssion, but not a touch in United's final third. It's all very strange to me, seems like the anti-premier league!
 
It would have probably worked if we didn't have Van Persie and our shiny new signing.

Spurs dropping points did us some good today.
