As a Liverpool fan, we definitely never expected to be in this position at the start of the season.
Nobody would have thought that Slot would come in and have the impact he has after such an iconic figure like Klopp leaving. My genuine expectations at the start of the season were to qualify for the CL and possibly win a domestic cup.
We have definitely capitalised on Man City’s drop off and I just don’t think Arsenal have been 100% at it. Granted, they have had injuries, but even with a fully fit squad at the start of the season they were still dropping some stupid points.
Unfortunately, what you are seeing now is our transfer policy living out as it always does. Ask most Liverpool fans and they will tell you that we generally get to this part of the season and several players look absolutely shot. Slot has not rotated much and players like Gravenberch, Mac Allister and Szoboszlai have hardly had a rest. However, FSG (our owners), want to run a sustainable model and we probably don’t have the depth at times to rotate or freshen things up as we should do. There is an obvious drop off in quality when we do rotate more than 2-3 players.
FSG have done some really good things for the club, including a new training facility and redeveloping Anfield. The fans are really divided on their approach to transfers and we have definitely not strengthened as much as we should have done in the past.
We should have enough now to get over the line with a few games to spare, but I doubt we will be in this position again next season with the likes of Trent and possibly Van Dijk/Salah moving on too - Unless FSG really back Slot in the Summer.
For what it’s worth, it is great to see teams like Forest and Villa challenging for trophies/CL qualification. Even though it was at our expense, I was happy for Newcastle fans too when they won the League Cup.
A PL title will be a fantastic achievement for Slot though, not many managers come in to The Prem and win it as dominantly as he has in their first season.
