Manchester United Thread

I think with the right CM signing (a box-to-boxer with an eye for goal) and everyone fit, Utd have a better team than Chelsea. Infact, last night if Utd had Rooney and/or RVP fit I'm pretty sure they'd have gone a few goals up in the first half.

Bit silly to compare City and Chelsea with Blackurn
 
as Gary Neville said we need probably 3-4 personal, I could change that to more if I go beyond just the players though.

Don't you think it will all collapse if Mansour and Abramovich leave ?
If they sell to another sugar daddy, then Chelsea and Man City will last longer.
Unless i'm seriously mistaken, those clubs are not self-sustainable at the moment.
I think it's good that clubs like City and Chelsea have broken in the duopoly Man Utd - Arsenal and i'm the one who has always said that the G14 and their glass ceiling are to blame for the sugar daddy clubs..

But i see no future for those clubs if the sugar daddy leaves. Maybe i'm wrong, godotelli. How do you see Manchester City's future post-Mansour ?

About football: Chelsea is imo stronger than City. City flatter to decive with their specatacular results... About the match against Cardiff: i missed the beginning of the match, so it's possible that the ref made a couple of decisions in favour of Cardiff...
 
Meh im still don't understand why Kagawa did't start. 2nd half against Swansea when moyes Put Januzaj on the wing and kagawa central we were brilliant.
But no lets continue to use Young. Surely Zaha or even Lingard can't be any worse?

It worries how as a team that is based around using wide players we have to use Valencia and Young.

Summer transfer window shambles has hurt us, I don't think we will buy anyone in January either.

Not to the point of a Blackburn. That's too extreme. Both clubs are bigger than Blackburn and Blackburn didn't have the luxury of guaranteed CL football for a number of years to grow further.
As for sustainability, I don't know enough about Chelsea to talk about them, but City's financial report will be released soon. I think it will show a smaller wage bill, increased revenue but a loss of around 30-50m

I hope we continue to flatter to deceive in that case :) Chelsea have a born winner as manager but I wouldn't have that many of their players in our first 11. It's oing to be a tough race right till the end with them and Arsenal.
 
Watched only the first half. In my oppinion, the penalty could have changed the match dynamic completely, but United din't know how to change the trend anyway and they did very silly mistakes at the back.

You can't win important matches playing like this. Personally I like a lot more the way City plays than Chelsea. City offers nice combination football and (not always succeeds) tries to attack and be offensive. Chelsea, as all Mourinho teams, tries to take profit of the opponent's errors and that's it. It's a legit way to play, of course, but not one I admire.

Unfortunately, I don't see United near the top 3 this season, even if they sign someone. As other say, United needs at least 2 good signings in the midfield, one at the back and needs to improve the performance of some players like Young and Valencia. Probably the biggest problem is sitting in the bench, thoug I could be mistaken and time could come back to prove me wrong.
 
If you read the Glazer's stock prospectus, their business model is built on us being in quarter finals, and finishing third in the league. If you look at the curve of diminishing returns in the premier league (in terms of spending) that's probably about right. If you're not willing to lose 50m a season (which obviously 99% of teams can't) than you accept you can't compete with City and Chelsea on transfers and wages. From there, the Glazer's commit to about 30m on transfers (net) a season. When they took over, that seemed like a lot of money - that's like a Rooney a season.

But it hasn't adjusted with the inflation in football at all, and more importantly it isn't taking into account the need to rebuild a squad when 5/6 players are coming to the end of their career.

I just can't believe Moyes and his team look at United right now and don't want to sign anyone. It HAS to be a matter of not having the money.

@ Gerd - Most United fans are bad losers - we're not used to it! It's just annoying when I watch LFC for 2 consecutive weeks they get a 'Spanish' and a 'Uruguayan' penalty which help them at crucial points in the match, but yesterday when we're on top, outplaying Chelsea at home we create a great move, but Welbeck is put off being able to shoot by a foul from behind by hte last man, and Phil Dowd waves play on. Say what you want, but last season that's a penalty and possibly a red card - THAT changes a match. I can't think of a single major incident in the past 3 months that has gone Moyes' way. We've even conceded 6 deflected goals this season in hte league alone!

Maybe Fergie did some devil dealing, and it's all coming home to roost.
 
You weren't outplaying Chelsea...you were a litle bit better at the start of the match, that is true, but not outplaying them...anyway Chelsea never needed to be good.
 
I think Mata needs to go somewhere, not sure what this means for Mutd's season . Another coup , RVP from Arsenal and Mata from Chelsea. ;) will Rooney to Chelsea in the summer?
 
I'm totally with Wilko. This isn't going to happen. It's just another distraction of an opponent - this time at the expense of a player. It's typical Mourinho.

I find it amusing that Chelsea value Mata so much higher than they value Rooney. I like the lil Spaniard, but Rooney has consistently delivered higher stats and more goals over the course of years in the premier league. I'm not saying one is necessarily better than the other, but they're surely comparable.

I usually don't get excited over transfer rumors but the signs pointing at this possibly happening are quickly becoming overwhelming. I'd be very pissy now if this doesn' end up hhappening. Mata would improve our team on and off the pitch. Not to mention it would make a tremendous statement in the directionof other players were trying to sign.

Been thinking along the same lines myself.
 
I'd love to see Mata, Januzaj and Kagawa drifting in behind a main striker at some point if this goes through.

Our reliance on mid-table wingers like Young and Valencia has killed any of the love I used to have for our direct, touchline hugging wingplay in the past.
 
Thank God for that. I'm genuinely relieved at not having to face City in the final.

This team is an absolute embarrassment to Manchester United. The quality of football is abject and getting worse every week. We were outplayed by Sunderland, at home, in a cup semi-final. Had less than 40% possession at one point.

Every week I think it can't get any worse, and every week it does. I can't even fault the effort of most, but they're so woefully not good enough. Carrick is a shadow of himself, and likely out for a long time again. Fletcher is half the player he once was, and Welbeck/Hernandez/Kagawa/Valencia look like pub players.

Only good thing was that the back 4 actually looked pretty good, and when all you ask Chris Smalling to do is defend (and not try to play actual football) he can do it pretty well.
 
Lowest point of the season for United probably. Especially when people are afraid to face City! Perhaps United could've been on a good run by then. Obviously City are a force to say the least but being afraid of facing them is ridiculous. It's a cup final, anything can happen. Wigan proved that last season.

That penalty shoot-out was almost as bad as Brazil - Paraguay in 2011.
 
At which point do you start pointing the finger at the manager?

A good manager makes a team better than the sum of their parts. We've gone from the ridiculous to ludicrous this season.

Dire football, non-existent midfield, shaky defence, over-reliance on an 18 year old clearly not ready to play 50 games a season, over-reliance on Wayne Rooney's set-pieces, etc.

This team has required a serious rebuilding for a couple of seasons and David Moyes is not the right man to be in control of that transition.
