The Retro-PES Corner

Finding the great Shingo “Seabass” Takatsuka would be an exceptional scoop... he hasn't given any public interviews since 2011 for the release of PES2012... at the time there were even rumours that he had died during the Japanese tsunami, but Konami denied this.
Adam took a picture with him when he was promoting Efootball when it was Twitter.

Note: Tribute to what Seabass did but he didn't created the game : that was a team. PES3 was, if i remember when he gets upped in grade thanks to his ideas but the whole game was something build as a full team (well, 10-15 people), he was a bit like the "mascot" of PES but he worked firstly and only on ball physics there was stuff he wasn't even aware (he said himself, later on on that time on another interview in Famitsu)

When there was Iss Pro era, he only worked on ball physics (so, he was linked with everyone sort of) but stuff like pressing system, stats/players recognition, tactical system : he improved it when he become bigger in KCET with his ideas but don't think he was THE one.

I remember when we all talked about Seabass on the old WEArePES forum, the website creator said it very often "Hold on! He's principally working on ball physics and tactics too as it's linked with ball circulation, don't listen what every media said"
Just to tell us that it's a team and not a lone man work behind everything. That guy "KAiWAi" was pretty close to Japan and super fan of the series way before us all so you can believe him/what i'm saying (just what i remember pretty well, nothing more).
Pressing system who revolutionized football games (as defending was hard and they wanted to do something balanced : probably another genius found that system)
Stats and players feeling/representation life-like was created on the little Snes firstly, then stats in the "Evolution" series became upper detailed etc. etc. until the deal become super big.

He's a Legend for his idea but hat on to the whole team, as you all know legends and real history are always romanced and remixed.
Then, if he didn't talked after 2012 and 2013 that was only because he get downgraded, simply (for the PS3 bad turning point especially)
He also did a big fail at the time (now we don't give a F) was not exploring new technologies and focusing too much on players AI instead of physics.

Purple is in poor form , opponent condition is green (Scoring and defending is very difficult. It also slows down the game.)
Referee Kazuki Ito, (Card fairness)
1200 camera zoom, (Slows down the game a bit more)
2001 option file, (My favorite season. With this option file, the possibility of injury is higher and the game becomes more realistic.)
6 stars, 15 minutes,
Play a friendly match in PES5 on PS2. Oh my god, this might be the most realistic thing I've ever played. Definitely my new favorite. Very balanced.

What do guys you think of PES 2009-2014 on PS2? I have repeatedly heard (and verified in practice) that PES 2008 on PS2 is a hidden gem and is not just a roster update. In terms of gameplay, did anything noticeably change in the 2009-2014 versions? I know that new modes were added there (Become a Legend, UEFA Champions League, Master League tweaks).

I am especially interested in @geeeeee opinion :))
I've played a lot of PES 2010 and 2011 as well as some PES 9 and 2013 on the PS2 and I can say they are worth playing but they are not in the same league as the classic PS2 era PES or indeed PES 2008 (PS2).

PES 2010 - 2013 certainly pushed the PS2 and Master League to its limit graphically and with so many official licences and features. It's amazing how Konami continued to work on PS2 era PES while most had jumped to the next gen. But it all feels a little rushed when you play these games. On the pitch, everything is a bit too fast and way too direct. It's all about speed and dribbling. The physicality of PES 5 is long gone and the varied AI of PES 2008 has been lost to manic AI pressure and the start of scripted-feeling goals.

That said, this era is still a worthy chapter of PES gaming. PES 2010-2013 (PS2) are just as great and indeed not-so-great as their PS3 counterparts, better in most cases, despite being completely different games of course.

Oh and from PES 2010 onwards, you get sexy goal nets. That's a bonus if you're into that kind of thing. 😉

@reinelt97 they continued not for the fun but South American were still on Ps2 + PSP versions sold a lot.

I replay a lot on par with PS2 version Pes 2011 and 2012 (2010 was the PS2 strictly engine) and to be honest, even if those game don't form a something like a whole as you can get with PS2 versions :
I found tons of outcomes you can't absolutely get on old era with that 2.5 engine, it's realistic, the feeling is very positive and i love it as it should have been that time. Didn't got the engine from Fifa, but firstly those games felt so different, and there's many + points there's in those 3 versions (depends the version too) in comparison to Fifa PS3.
Ball physics and long play is better, shooting feel, individualities, rythm variation, and tactically too.
And i'm a Fifa 11 lover, but i must admit that FTM i'm catched between Pes 2011 firstly and the 2012/2013 after.

Edit talk : i'm currently rennamming all players from unplayable nations like Andorra etc and correcting some height/weight on paper to recreate it later on WE 2008 ps2, i did some pretty hard teams like Vietnam for the challenge (i got fun to do it) but now i'm checking from the start in alphabetical order.

Albania, Andorra where easy (numbers corresponding for Albania).
There's also real names for Cyprus and some others nations too. Lot of work but i hate fake names since ISS Deluxe lol, talking about that version the 30th anniversary on Snes hack version got the exact real names for every players.
Another version was out but the guy didn't respected the real names (melting Zola with Del Piero and renamming Fidrinii/Del Piero with another player don't remember who etc. i didn't liked it that much)

I'm disappointed by the Japanese community there who didn't reach them for an interview"about their previous work on WE-PES.
We didn't hear much about the team that worked on the game. I guess they no longer work for Konami and they can talk about the behind the scenes now.
I still have hope to listen or read about the team that worked on players attributes and appearances and the evolution of their work

Maybe it's a cultural thing that Japanese people don't usually look for an expose in hope that a former employee verbally tears apart their former employer like we do in the west 😄

Hi, a friend and I were licensing some missing players in jleague 2007 translated by billykong.
We're missing these two players and haven't found an exact match. Does anyone know who they might be?
We theorized they could be Ignacio Torres and Infante, but the match isn't perfect.

That's crazy - two WE9LEs and WE10LEs! You're either loaded, lucky, or both! 😂

If you ever fancy selling a WE10LE let me know - it's a big hole in my collection!

PS Thank you for the clean WE6 translation - legend!

LOL!

I organize events in Paris for the older PES/WE/ISS games.

So I've invested in it. But yes, these games are extremely expensive!

I don't remember by Heart but you can check my PES 6 OF. See my signature.
I've recreated America based on the JL 2007 game !

The OF editor from @marqisspes6 !
It seems that neither OF Editor 2007-2010_1.1.0 nor OF Editor 2011-2014_1.1.1 includes the functionality for batch-editing all players' attributes. What I need is a feature to globally reduce attributes like dribbling speed for all players.
Some people say that PESFan Editor has this feature, but I cannot find a PESFan Editor that supports the PS2 versions of WE2008/JLWE2008.

I added some config files for earlier games to @marqisspes6 option file editor so would be interested to see if they work! They definitely open the option files just didn’t test editing, saving and loading.

I love PES 5 but I think PES 4 beats it in these aspects:

CPU AI (attack and defence)
Foul logic
Dribbling fluidity and animations. It feels far less 8 directional than PES 5 (and 6), almost like an early PS3-era FIFA

Very underrated and has to be better than 6 for me.

It really feels like a bridge between PES 3 and PES 5 while keeping the great gameplay aspects of those two.

WE8LE and WE2008CC (J.League version) are the most fun ones for me.

PES 5 captures the football experience the best with its physicality, midfield battles and flair players standing out but the AI is just too tame.

I want to keep saying: for those, like me, who putted a Pes5 option file on we9le and was disappointed by its a.i..keep original option file on we9le and you will have a lot improved a.i over Pes5 one, a lot better on defense side( the best in the series) and quite better at attacking.

Damn ! Back to ps2 era debates again and i love it. I just cant seem to move on from ps2 era pes and its bittersweet i have to say this. I have abandoned modern era football for good, last one was maybe pes 21 and fifa 21. There was a kid in me back then who thought if ps2 pes played like they used to, imagine foorball games in ten years. Who'd have thought ?

Same, i have been playing PS2 PES titles for a whole year now after i overplayed PES 21.

I even tried EA FC 26 a few days back when i bought a PS5 but it just feels totally flat gameplay wise. The presentation and all of the eye candy is wonderfull but the game misses the true football experience.

I came back from EA FC 26 to play a Master League match in JLWE2008CC and had a wonderfull 3-3 match where the flow actually resembled a football match.

Its not even nostalgia, im 26 and i started playing football games in 2012/13 so i missed out on PS2 era PES games. They are just way more fun and "authentic" for me currently. Newer PES titles were good but i been playing PES 2021 for a few years and it just feels stale. It might sound cliche but these PS2 titles really give off a feeling that they were made by a team that wanted to capture the essance of football (that's why i love these old PES intros, they focus on these little moments instead of just goals, especially the PES 3 one)

Of course i would jump into any decent modern football game, but its looks like it wont happen for a while.

Think they are Guillermo Cerda (RB) and José Mosqueda (CF).

Hello!
I'm about to start yet another ML on PES 6, but my plan was to make it slightly different, in a sense of updating all teams based on how each season turns out to be.
Now, one thing I wanted to do is make regens that are not just the same player reborn as a 17 y/o, but instead what I was planning to do was to edit every player that retires each season so that when they come back as regens, they have a whole new face and name, making it feel like they are actually different players.
However, I have one question that I need to ask: if I edit a player that has already retired by editing him on a separate option file and then replacing the original player with the new one, do the stats of the retired player appear under the name of the regen?
I actually find myself asking this question because I am aware that even if you delete a club emblem from an option file while you're using it on your ML team, it will stay visible on the ML save.

English isn't my first language but I hope I have made myself clear, although if there's anything you didn't understand about my question please let me know.

Thank you very much in advance!
