FIFA World Cup Brasil 2014

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

and I hope Iceland will leave Croatia out.

You might not believe me, but I actually hope that they still can knock us out.

I know that it will be a blow for us to miss 2nd consecutive World Cup, but I think that is the only way things in our Football Federation would start to clean up. Everything that Bilić had left us 2 years ago, Štimac, Šuker and Mamić managed to destroy in 2-3 months. Than, it was just going round and round in circles with no apparent goal except to build up the price of Sammir and Halilović.

And even in our U21 and U17 teams it is not that good. 10 out of 11 starting players in U17 team were from Dinamo Zagreb, yet both Osijek and Hajduk are playing better in U19 league

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

khedira probably did his acl last night. he might miss the world cup. :(

Fixed. Hope he recovers in time.

@relegation: Great to see Iceland "win" 0-0 against Croatia, but I think they'll have no chance to stand them in front of their own fans in the second leg. Greece and the Ukraine shouldn't feel too save, there are only two goals needed by their opponents at their respective home matches to get to Brazil and neither Romania nor France should be written off to early. Same goes for Sweden, they are always hard to play at home, will be a difficult task for Portugal.

So basicly nothing is decided yet, looking forward for the second leg and continue to support the "underdogs" Iceland and the Ukraine.

Ukraine is basically going to Brazil.

Kos will be out, Varane is injured, the defense is big mess ATM. France needs to score 3 at home (4 or more if Ukraine manage to score again) which's unlikely to happen giving the team's current état d'esprit, or their strikers form.

Staring Rémy that match was a mistake and an unusual one for such a coach as Deschamps.

In front of which fans? :D

Maksimir was full in only one game in this qualifiers and that was against Serbia (and that was because our "peaceful" history from which no one seems to want to move on). For other games it sadly was almost a carbon copy of what Dinamo has at its games: less than a 1/2 of stadium full and all booing and insulting players, football federation and Zdravko Mamić.

In 20 years before this qualifiers we had only lost once in official match at Maksimir, against England in WC2010 qualifiers. In those soon-to-be-over qualifiers we have lost at Maksimir against Scotland and Belgium and were more than lucky not to loose points against Serbia and Macedonia

I didn't knew that about the fans, sad to hear..

But don't you think being such a important match the fans will show up in more significant numbers and with a better attitude?

I hope they do, I wanna see Croatia in the finals :)

Well, last home game (vs. Belgium) was important for us as we still had a chance for 1st place (by winning that and than vs. Scotland 4 days later). Yet, there wasn't much interest from fans.

The thing is: our NT is playing quite bad for last 4-5 years (exception being EURO12 finals) and the only reason for that is because of few guys in high places who are only looking for their personal gain. For instance, Davor Šuker was never elected for president of HNS (or CFF - Croatian Football Federation in English). Vlatko Marković was elected once again and after about 2 years into his 4-year mandate he was forced to retire by Šuker and Mamić and than Šuker just took over from him. Almost every key place in HNS is being held by someone from Dinamo Zagreb posted there by Zdravko Mamić. There is a real mess in our federation and yet State can't do anything because FIFA will than suspend us because of "politics interfering with football federation".

Fans are angry because of that, players are demoralized by calling up of players who are not even playing for their clubs (Alen Halilović btw.) and who are called just because it helps their club (guess which) to build up their price on transfer market. To the extent I understand that Modrić, Mandžukić, Srna, Rakitić, Olić, Kovačić and other who are brilliant in their clubs (Srna also being captain in Shakhtar for quite some time now and Rakitić now captain at Sevilla) don't really give all they have in national team when they are paired by players who are still not on that level and who don't even deserve to be in senior national team. Some of them are not even doing well in U21 or U17 teams, yet they are being called up for senior team.

The thing that is bothering me is that this is probably 2nd strongest squad we ever had (1st being, in my opinion, the squad that was at EURO08 finals) and now headed up by probably most talented young coach in Croatia (Niko Kovač) and their careers are being ruined by, well, politics.

Ukrrraiiine! :WORSHIP::WORSHIP::WORSHIP:

Congratulations, brothers, it was just an amazing night, great atmosphere at the Olympic Stadium, and of course the exciting game the Ukrainian team, bravo, guys, come to Brazil! We are waiting for you there already. ;)

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

Deschamps was the coach of Marseille in season 2011, when they played against Olympiacos in the group stage of Champions League. So, while Olympiacos was winning 3-1 against Arsenal, Marseille was losing 2-0 against Dortmund in Germany and needed only to win in order to qualify to the last 16. Guess what? Between 85'-90' (they did not want to risk, to leave it for injury time) they scored twice, in a match that was fixed and ended 2-3.

Seems like justice will be served, and that mafia member Deschamps along with Platini will see his national side left out by Ukraine, the team that they prayed to be drawn with.

Thanks for taking the time to explain, seems a very deep problem in the federation, politics is always destroying things, this time seems to be no different.

I hope you guys manage a way to clean up the house of these assholes and let the NT be what it should, I love players like Olić and would be great to see them in federation worthy of them.

Cuky, I don't agree this is the reason for our bad results lately. Off course, everything stands as you said, politics did ruin most of waht was built for two decades, football atmosphere in Zagreb is on the rock bottom, starting with club level and reflecting on NT level (we both know why). But bad play and results can not be excused with that. At the end, it's the players who have their 90 minutes on the pitch and they were displaying poorly. One of the reasons is players are taking the NT games as a chance to relax from their club schedule and hang out instead of taking it seriously. Before and after the match their mouths are full of big words but when it comes to that 90 minutes most of them underperform. Another (even bigger) reason is bad choice of players. Off course, it's mostly Stimac's fault, but both Bilic and now Kovac are no better. We usually start our matches with at least 2 players short as some of them are nowhere near NT level of football (based on their current form or quality level) but are chosen on "path of least resistance" because sometime ago they were here. I'm pointing mostly at Perisic, Strinic, Olic who should not even be called, not to mention being starters. Olic is usually a man that makes advantage (in favor of the opponent), Perisic has never ever shown anything in Croatian jersey and Strinic is a player of 2nd division football level. We certainly have some better options worth at least giving a chance. Tactical experiments didn't help either. We have built our style of play for 20 years and now suddenly we have to be Spain and change our tactics because "everyone plays that way".

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

Agreed.
But if it wasn't for politics we would have more great young players soon to be ready for senior team. U21 team has shown some great performance in last few games, but those players won't be up in senior team as long as we have players called up because of their price or because they were fantastic sometimes. For me, time is up for Šimunić, Eduardo, Olić, Srna and few others. Even Pletikosa is getting kinda old, but he is still only constant in our team with constant good performance. We have players like Rebić, Vrsaljko, Pamić who barely get their chance because those "legends" have to be there.

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

Proud of the Icelandic lads, who showed fantastic character after losing their top goalscorer to injury just before half-time and then going down to 10 men 5 minutes into the second half. I was sure the game was over by then, but they proved me wrong. Before the match it was top priority to keep a clean sheet and even if there were a few scares nothing really came close to Croatia's first minute chance.

I think the red card on the Icelandic player was justified, even if the replays were a bit shit and I couldn't really tell how much contact there was, it was probably the right call. But apart from that the ref had a shit day. We got absolutely nothing from him, while every stumble from a Croatian player had a whistle blow shortly after.

I'm positive for the second leg, but it's still a mountain to climb, with avalanches threatening to fall all the way up! Or something. It's gonna be tough.

Believe me, this happens in more NTs than you think, especially in South America, Balcans and East Europe, or generally where agents have a huge power on Football Associations.
There are dozens of players that plays or played for NT despite they don't deserve it but they have an important agent, just think about José Sosa or Ariel Garcé, or Uvini or Casemiro.

By the way, I didn't expect to read Šuker is such a boss, he seemed a nice guy when he was a footballer.
And, a bit off-topic, I agree with you about the great work Bilić did, it's a shame he failed in Russia, I still believe he deserve to coach a medium/important european club.

well Šuker is more like a puppet for Mamić. He was a great player, yes...but as a person I don't like him at all.

Bilić had loads of bad luck in Russia. Lokomoitv had some great games which they dominated, and yet they would go on and loose or draw. He is now manager at Besiktas.

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

Our team didn't lose with Fomenko. Already 1 year he's our coach28 goals and 4 missed in group. If you think our players have euphorie you make a mistake.

Wasn't meant as a swipe at Ukraine. You're a good team. I just don't think France are definitely out as many seem to think.

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

ukraine is a very likeable team and I think they deserve it more than france atm but 17 of the 28 goals they scored in the group was against san marino, man. :D

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

I'm pretty sure France will be at the world cup. The euphotic reactions about The Oukraine's win are very premature. Also i don't see why France would deserve less to go to the WC. France where in a group with Spain.

As I said you make a mistake if you think we have euphoria. Fans maybe have, but not coach and players. We lost 4 play-off matches.(against Croatia 1998, Germany 2002, Greece 2010). Just read what Ribèry and other french players said before game about Ukraine. They deserve this loss and on Tuesday we'll see who deserve to play in Brazil! Vive l'Ukraine! :GSCARF:

Re: Road to the World Cup Brazil 2014

i read somewhere that FIFA will pay each day 20 548 € for Khedira injury...
