Manchester United Thread

spek, if rooney fit he should go to World cup but i don't think he should be a guaranteed starter in every game like how the situation is now, recently against germany and chile his performance was woeful and i'm being kind here.

5th* highest ever goal scorer and has the lowest goal/game ratio out of all of them, also danny sturridge has more combined goals/assists than rooney and rodriquez has scored 15 goals this season, same as rooney and rodriguez doesn't take penalties, i don't know where you are getting your incorrect statistics from. rodriguez has only 1 cap but that's partly the problem, some players like rooney get selected by default instead of players that are on form. also only suarez has more assists than rickie lambert this season in premier league so imo i don't think it's peculiar to have a different opinion. at the end of the day i want england to win, get rooney on his euro 2004 form and i'l be on cloud 9.

True, I thought he was 4th. Huge difference there. And yes, we can all agree Sturridge is the in form English attacker, and will start for England. My point was around Rodriguez and, since you've added him into the mix, Lambert. Rooney has as many goals as Rodriguez, and the same number of assists as Lambert. And has played fewer matches. So you're getting the productivity of both in one player, so to speak.

I just get so bored of how cool it is to hate on Rooney, and how the general opinion seems to be that England would be better off with less talented players who have less experience and aren't even more in form than the fat scouser just because they're different and 'new'. It seems such a British thing to do, wonder if all countries enjoy tearing down their best players.

Our record, goals and chances created when Kagawa and Mata start is excellent.

If only there was some pattern that Moyes might see there.

Shinji is an absolute joy to watch. The way he picks up the ball from midfield with his head up - just so different to what we've become accustomed to. Breaks my heart that he'll be leaving in the summer - probably losing his place to Ashley f*cking Young.

It was astounding how awful Valencia looked towards the end when he started getting the ball in tight spaces. Compared to the sheer ability of Mata/Kagawa/Janujaz - he was like a Sunday leage player. Yet if all players were fit, he'd be out right, Young on the left and RVP + Rooney in the middle.
 
I really really REALLY hope we don't sell Kagawa in the summer and that our manager plays him as much as possible... I completely agree with what you said.

Nani looked good as well. Valencia and Young should be used as backup options at best...

Good to see that we do actually have some of the players to play dynamic free flowing attacking football like City, Arsenal and Pool. Other than Mata and Kagawa, it was a joy to watch Januzaj s movement again. He looks like he s been bulking up and seemed to be a lot more steadfast today than I've seen before. I pray we can hold on to him for the foreseeable future, he truly will be something special.
Buttner is the one that surprised me again today..i agree with most his defending is still shaky at best but going forward he actually has some creativity and speed on his side and didn't even look all that much out of place alongside the three mentioned before.

Lastly..glad to see Nani back.
 
if it wasn't for the lack of vision I'd say he would(and should) make a great successor to scholes in the center of the park. I know this will never happen though.
 
I have the distinct impression that Rooney is a seriously underrated player, but he is a poor man's Scholes...Scholes and Giggs didn't do themselves justice by playing so long. People remember them for the rong reasons (i.e. the last years). They were among the best players ever to play for United.

The difference between Scholes and Rooney is that Scholes always knew when and how to pass the ball - short, long, forward, sideways, etc., while Rooney pings a 40 yard ball to the wings all the time and every time he plays in the midfield we suffer from this. Yes, he has a great long passing technique but he's no midfielder and certainly no Scholes - he can't dictate a team's attacks the way Scholes did.

I agree with Gerd that Rooney is massively underrated, but as a striker. IMO he's one of the best English strikers in the Premier League era. United is suffering because Moyes is trying to play 4-2-3-1 with the CAM/AMF being a striker (Rooney) - hence we play with 2 forwards and we can't have a fluent 3 behind the striker. You can see that it's working much better when we play a forward and behind him we play actual attacking midfielders.

i like scholes, probably best player to ever play in premier league imo and rooney is no where near him. i agree with all of this, rooney 1st touch is often a problem especially when he has a bad game he has a really bad game and when he pings it to the wings with a slow pass and it goes out for a throw in that also a problem. rooney decent player sometimes but i don't think he massively underrated, tbh i think some man u fans overrate him a bit..

I think some of this is fair. Rooney has never had a consistently excellent touch - which is possibly the single most important attribute of a midfielder. I can't really work out why people think he'll end up there.

He has always been at his best as a true striker. His movement, instincts and ability to do the right thing near the goal is what he's best at. He's best when he doesn't really have to think about what he's doing, and can react to a situation.

Now that he's going to be captain for the forseeable future, I really hope we allow playmakers to play as playmakers (Mata/Kagawa) and forwards play as forwards (Rooney).
 
Thing is, IS he good enough to be starter at such a huge club like Man Utd? I think he is more of a Spurs/Everton level player personally.
